The Cambria hospital has now 300 patients. Dr. Buck, with an efficient corps of aids, is in charge. Two of the patients died yesterday, | Miss Haghes, a young lady aged twenty, and Mrs. Teeters, a lady aged eighty-three. She | Was suffering from a compound fracture of the arm. The remainder of the patients are doing well. Several injured people have had opera~ tions performed upon them. Bishop Phelan before his return to Pittsburg organized the Catholic forces in that neighbor hood and all are devoting themselves to hard work assiduously. What the hospitals would have done without the Sisters is a dificult ques- tion. There are nine Charity, seven Francis- | can and seven Benedictine Sister's i Among the priests are Rev. Fathers Guido, | Geobel. Cosgrave, Gallagher. Trotwein, Rosen- | street, Boren, Corcoran, Derlin, Boyle. Smith. | O'Connelland Lambing. Father Derlin. who | lives in Hazelwood. Pittsburg. hurried to the | aceue last Saturday, fearful that his brother | aud parents were drowned. He was happily | mistaken in his supposition, for none ot his | relatives had been injured. Mr. Derlin, who | heeded the warning as to the danger of the | dam had hurried his wife and two children to the hills, but returned himself to save some tl from his house. While in the building the food struck it and swept it away, jamming it among alot of other houses and hurling them sround with a regular cLurning motion. Mr. Derlin went to his top story, clamored to the roof and escaped from there himself fortunate in saving his family. J. J. Murphy, the Catholic bookseller of Pittsburg, haunted the railroad morgue all day with a white, sad face. His brother, James, and his entire family have been lost. and Mr. Murphy is seeking for the remains, Every fresh arrival of ghastly burdens set him to anxious i The loss su: suffer a loss of about % of the new bridge over the Potomac at this place will now be delayed at inquiry, but as yet he has not discovered his selstives. David Creed, brother of Thomas Creed, of Peunsylvauia, has been lost with bis entire family. The remains of John Ryan, ex- sheriff of Cambria county, were found yester- day. WOODVALE 4 SEA OF MUD, Where Woodvale ouce stood there is now $15,000, At Sandy Hook most of the railroad sidings were washed out and carried bodily a consider- able distance. The loss to the railroad at this unt will probably amount to $150,000, while t sustained by the canal company, in the ss of buildiugs, will reach an aggregate of | fully $100,000, AT POINT OF ROCK: At Point of Rocks Messrs. Hickman & Wright .000. The completion least three ago, and uths. It was finished several da was to have been delivered to the bridge com- pany by the contractors on Saturday. Their joss will amount to between £10,000 and $15,000. CONDITION OF THE RAILROAD. One track og the Baltimore and Ohio was cleared yesterday, and trains were run through without delay as far as Harper's Ferry. ‘The Pennsylvania railroad company expect to | have their road-bed in condition to resume travel from Frederick northward about Wednesday. One of their biggest breaks is at the iron bridge spanning the Monocacy a few es north of Frederick, where 280 feet by 20 | feet deep were washed away, FREDERICK COUNTY'S Loss, ‘The loss to Frederick county in the destruo- tion of bridges and roads alone, it is now be- lieved, will amount to between $100,000 and 2150,000. It was learned yesterday that one of the reservoirs from which the water supply of Frederick is furnished was also badly injured, AT PORT DEPOSIT the supposition is that the bed of the railroad from the depot to Rock Run is completely washed out. and should this be the case it will take several days before travel is resumed. Since the water has fallen, and a closer exami- bation can be had of the exact situation, the damage is seen to be much greater to citizens end business men than was first predicted, even larger than from any previous flood that has visited Port Deposit. There is not a fence or outhouse from the depot to Rock Run that has uot been washed out and carried away. A CANAL RUINED, The Susquehanna and Tidewater canal, ex- tending from Columbia, Pa., to Havre de Grace, Md., is completely ruined. There are millions to solid structures aud thence to the ground. | Of fect of valuable lumber drifted on islands His property was entirely ruined, but he thinks | and the shore. There were thirty rafts washed away from Wrightsville. They were very val- uable. The emount of loss is immense, but figures cannot be obtained. The Pennsylvania railroad company is unable to run trains from Columbia to Perryville om account of wash- outs all along the road, The Flood in Virginia. Lynchburg is almost isolated from the outer world, having had no northern mails since Fri- day. The damage by the flood will probably not reach $10.000 in the aggregate, No reports can be received from the upper river on ac- count of washouts on the Richmond and Alle- ghevy railroad, and all telegraph lines are September 23, 1582, in connection with a tropical hurricane. The amount for three con- secutive days at that time was 93¢ inches, In New London, Conn., February 10-14, there fell 8.93 inches. This was during the prevalence of a double storm, the worst half being a *‘secon- dary” to the other, neither of them coming from low latitudes, . But this was almost without parallel! in that region for half a century. About a foot of rain fell at Charleston, 8. C., at the time of the August lone, in 1885; while Galveston had 16.53 inches between September 15 aud 20, the same year, from a similar storm, The extraordinary “downpour at Alexandria, La.—25 inches—in the fifty hours ending June 16, 1886, is probably attributable to alike cause. But this class of deluge-breeders never gets inland very far. For this time of year and the region’ between the Alleghanies and the Mississippi, it would be hard to find a gen- eral rain storm equaling in severity that of which the Johnstown disaster is such a start- ling feature. Of course, in a mountainous country like Cambria county, the smallest creeks would swell enormously and quickl under such circumstances, even if no cloud- burst occurred. A local reinforcement of that sort, however, might easily have been added to the general downpour while the meteoro- logical conditions of last week prevailed. 190 A New Catholic Bishop. Very Rev. A. Van De Vyver, vicar general and administrator of the diocese of Richmond, has been elevated to the bishopric of that See. He succeeds the Right Rev. John J. Keane, who was translated to the See of Ajasso, and made rector of the new Catholic university in this District. The Inquest inthe Cronin Case. The taking of testimony before the jury of inquest in the Cronin case was begun in Chic- j ago yesterday. J. J.
