THE LEAGUE POSTPONEMENT. President Fitzgerald’s Circular and What he Says About it. Lrecorx, Nev., June 4—The circular of President Fitzgerald postponing the big con- vention of the Irish National League to be held im Philadelphia is dated to-day. The full text of the interesting document is as follows: To the Officers and Members of the Irish National League of America: Dear Sins: The national convention called for the 9th and 10th of July at Philadelphia is Postponed antil after the present session of the ‘itish parliament, in compliamce with the ca- bled advice of Mr. Parnell. For some a) Ihave been in correspondence with Mr. = nell and other Irish leaders, urging that Mr. ell and some of his ablest colleagues should attend the Philadelphia convention on the dates named above, but the replies did not en- courage the hope that we should have an Irish delegation at the convention. Finally I cabled Wm. O’Brien on the 27th of May, as follows: “Urge necessity of sending delegation to Philadelphia convention ¥th July. Your ence with Protestant nationalist would have very beneticial effect. Answer. (Signed) Jouy Frrzggraip.” MR. PARNELL’S DISPATCH. On the morning of May 28 I received the fol- Jowing cable: “Joun Firzceratp—O'Brien has shown me your telegram. I strongly advise postponing convention until after session of parliament. (Signed) Pare.” I was at once convinced that Mr. Parnell Must have had strong reasons for cabling the above request, which by every loyal member of the league should be accepted as a command. In order to have the fullest expression of opin- ion on the subject from the officers and mem- bers of the national executive committee of the league. the national secretary sent the follow- ing telegram to each officer and member of the comumitiee: “Parnell cables strongly advising postpone- ment of the convention until after the session of parliament. What do you advise? Answer. (Signed) Jous P. Sutton.” MOST OF THE DELEGATES FAVOR POSTPONEMENT. Thirty-three delegates, including the execu- tive officers, favor compliance with Mr. Par- uell’s wishes, three are opposed and three could not be reached. Ivery much regret the imconveuience caused to the Irishmen of Phil- adelphia on account of this postponement and the expense caused thereby paid by the national treasurer. I feel sure the patriotism of the members of the league will recognize the wis- dom of being governed by the advice of Mr. Parnell and of avoiding any action that might be coustrued as a revolt against his leader- ship. “A postponement of a similar nature and for exactly the same reason took place in January, 1886, at which time a convention to be held in Chicago was postponed at the cabled request of Mr. Parnell until after the close of the British parliament then about to assemble and did not convene until August of the same year. The statement that the postponement of the con- Yention is in any way connected with the abomi- nable murder of Dr. Cronin is absolutely false the sole and all-sufticient reason for Mr. Par- nell’s request is that opportunity may be given the Irish leaders to attend the convention without absenting themselves from their parliamentary duties at the present critical time. A little patience is all that is asked from the Irishmen of Philadelphia. The Irish National League of America was founded to aid and not to thwart the recognized leader of the Irish people. Opposition to his plans at the present time would be next to treaton to the Irish cause, and I am confident that, no matter at what sacrifice, the postponement of the convention at Mr. Parnell’s desire until after the session of parliament will meet with unqualitied approval of every right-thinking friend of Ireland. (Signed) Joux FitzcEratp, President 1. N. L. A.” ee = AN ENGLISH DIVORCE CASE. The Faithless Husband a Clergyman who is Now in Philadelphia. Loxpox, June 4.—A decree of divorce which has just been made absolute by Justice Butt, develops the fact that the city of Philadelphia is just now sheltering a once prominent divine of the Wesleyan denomination, but who gave up pulpit prospects here to fly to America with one of the fair singers of his choir. The name of this shining light of a powerful denomina- tion is William Mews, although since he settled @own across the Atlantic he has transformed it into Vernon. According to the evidence upon which the decree was granted he was married toa young woman of good family in 1882, while pastor of a Methodist church in Man- chester. All went well until he became enam- ored of one Jessie Braikenbridge, a tall, well- formed, vivacious brunette, who was looked upon asthe mainstay of the éhurch choir. One morning in February of last year he left home to fulfill an alleged engagement to preach at Accrington. He never returned. Later in the week Jessie also turned up missing. The gossips shook their heads, but the devoted wife and the trustees of the church spurned the in- sinuations ih scorn. Investigation showed, however, that the couple had sailed for the United States and a detective sent over by the eburch found them living together in Philadel- = to which city they had just moved from jersey City. under the name of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon. After the injured wife applied for divorce Mews wrote two letters making a full confession, but with a show of bravado. He closed one of the letters in the following style: ‘Devil a cent will they get out of me. Sin- cerely yours, Mews, alias Vernon, alias Mar- shall, and in the opinion of many, the very evil himself.” —— a JACK THE RIPPER. A Belief that He has Resumed His Bloody Work. Loxpox, June 4.—The denizens of Horsley- down, on the southern side of the Thames, were thrown into a fever of excitement this morning by the discovery in the river of the lower por- tions of a woman's body cut into pieces. The rest of the body and the legs were no where to be seen. These ghastly objects were tied in a parcel with a stout cord. Shortly afterward a parcel of female clothing was found at Bat- tersea. Both the fragments of the body and the clothes were wrapped in pieces of cloth, which together had comprised a pair of woman's @rawers. On the waistband of the drawers was the name “Fisher” in indelible ink. It is evi- Gent that the clothing found belongs to the mur- | dered woman. ‘The portions of the trunk showed the woman to have been large and well developed. They had apparently been in the water about teu days. ‘Lhe discovery has re- Vived the excitement which prevailed during the period of the Whitechapel | ohio and it is | generally believed that “Jack the Ripper” has | resumed his bloody work. At Battersea were and the thighs of a female, showing conclusive evidences of having been cut from the trunk found at Honseleydown. ‘They too were wrapped in pieces of the pair of Grawers. SIXTE! —— N LIVES LOST. A Story of Shipwreck on the Lake Which is Regarded with Suspicion. Curcaco, June 4.—A dispatch from Racine, Wis., says: Robert York, claiming to be second Mate of the fore-and-aft schooner Isaac Housten, tells a story of a shipwreck by which sixteen lives were lost. He says the Housten cleared from Asbland last Wednesday with iron ore for South Chicago. When six miles off Milwaukee, during the storm of Friday night, the vessel broke completely in two, and Captain Hudson, his wife and two children, First Mate Fowler, aud eleven of the crew perished. York also claims that he himself and a sailor named Joseph Bouts locked arms over # spar, and after being in the water thirty-two hours came ashore this side of Milwaukee. York tells a straight story, but lake men here give it little credence. The Damage at Lewiston. Lewistox, Pa., June 4.—The town of Lewis- ‘ton has been cut off from the rest of the world since last Friday. The situation is this: The Waters rose nine feet higher than in 1847. Eight river bridges, railroad and county, were all way. There is but one open railroad here. South- ward the line is a wreck. The highways of the town are covered with debris 10 feet high, and many of its population are sheltered and fed in the court-house and otherwise. It is impos- sible to estimate the loss by damage to prop- erty. No lives were lost, Mothe: Son Murdered. ‘Trevron, Micu., June 4.—Lawrence Murry, SOCIAL MATTERS.
