The feature of the third day's session of the convention of the New Jerusalem church this morning at the church of Our Father, was the address from the council of the English church. It was read by their messenger, Rev. Mr. Gum ton, and was congratulatory in its tone. A reply was read by Rev. Mr. Goddard. Rev. Mr. Fox, of this city, was appointed as a special Messenger to take the address to the meeting of the English council, which will be held ig England in August next, Various reports were received. CRANGES ADOPTED. Rev. T. F. Wright, of Massachusetts, from the council of ministers, offered an amend- ment to the by-laws, which was adopt changing the number of members oa the boar of home and foreign missions from seven to nine, He also reported in favor of printing am abridged livargy for the use of missionaries, This recommendation was approved. THE ELECTION OF OFFICERS was then held, and resulted in the re-election of the old officers, as follows: President, Rev. Chaune Giles, of Philadelphia; vice-presi- dent, Rev. John Worcester, of Newtonville, Mass. ; secretaries, Rev. Willard H. Hinkley, of Brookline, Mase., and Rev, 3. 8 Seward, of New York city; Dawson. The members of the ge elected, the only of the name of G Thayer, of Michigan, in place of M. W. Field, of Michigan, deceased. The other members are Rev, 8. F. Dike, D. D., of Maine . Carswell, of Canada. At 12 o'clock the convention took a recess — 2 o'clock in order to call upon the Presi- treasurer, Mr. Francis A SEMENTS. The entertainment at last nig’ ht for the benefi ‘olumbia athletic cl The audience was large and en- the play proved to be well written gz. the ladies and gentlemen who Participated acted intelligently and with spirit, and the piece was well put upon the stage. Although Mr. H. T. Smith has been known as 8 prolific song writer and as having been guilty of one or two operettas, he has never before attempted anything so a as the three- act comedy entitied * * which was presented last ane denied work the play has a distinct though not intricate plot, probable in its conception and con- sistent in its development. The dialogue is bright and crisp, there are no long speeches, and many of the situations are highly amusing. Two of the characters—the rich uncle and the maid of all work—are very well drawn, and the others are sufficiently distinct for the work they have to perform. The cast last night, composed entirely of amateurs, was as follows Miss Jane Meredith (Fannie’s aunt, a middle. — PUBLIC AMU ed spinster), Miss Fielding Roselle; Fannie leredith (secretly engaged to Herbert), Miss Rosa Cotterill; Clara Bomeell (secret ed to Robert), Miss } Butterworth; Susie Jones engaged to Charlie), Miss ; China (a colored maid of all puted 57 of Paradise Flats), Miss Maria Roelker: Larry Singleton (Her- bert’s uncle, an old Dache! lor with a young heart), Mr. H. T. Smith; Herbert Singleton. Robert Jennings, Chai Stacry, = proprietors of “Paradise Flats,” Messrs. Pierre C. Stevens, 8, C, Elliott and Leonard C. Chew. The burden of the work falls on the uncle and the maid of all work, and Mr. Smith and Miss Roelker proved themselves fully equal to the task. Mr. Smith has been recognized as an excellent comedian, and he presented the eccentric of Larry Singleton with an ease and a finish that would have done credit toa professional. Miss Roelker sacrificed her good looks to a black face, and was thoroughly natural in her negro dialect. The rest of the cast acquitted them- selves creditably, and in the musicale scene Misses Cotterill and Roselle sang very prettily. The entire performance was very smooth and fully justified the remark of an old stager, that it was the best amateur performance ever seen in this city. Much credit belongs to Mr. 8. W. Keene, who had entire charge of the 5 ALpavon's Graxp Opera Hovse.—“The Mi- kado,” which was produced at Albaugh’s last night by the Lamont opera company, was much better sung and acted than the “Black Hus- sar,” which was attempted last week. The work is more within the scope of the abilities of the troupe, and besides, it is much more fa- miliar to them. Miss Lamont was the Yum- Yum, and she intensified by the grace of her acti and singing the pleasant impression she a 4 was here with the here in the part when she McCaull company. Miss Baker's Katisha was an excellent periormance, her voice showing to good advantage, while she acted with spirit aud effect. Brocalinis Poo-Bah was well ren- dered, and Louis De Lange's Ko-Ko was the same that he has frequently given in this city. The chorus and orchestra did effective work, and were obedient to the baton of the misical di- rector, Mr. Bauer. Mr. Wm. Pruette sang the title role with that ease and finish which char- acterizes all his work. Hanris’ Buov Taratrer.—Mr. Frank Kilday and an excellent company gave Boucicault's sensational drama, he Streets of New York, toa crowded house at Harris’ last night, and the piece was handsomely placed upon the stage. Tom Badger is a part which is admire adopted to Mr. Kilday’s abilities, and the ot er characters were all well rendered. Tue Grose Tueater.—The reguler special company of the Globe, including the ridver? burlesquers, furnished an enjoyable program, The specialty acts were cleverly done and the burlesques were highly amusing. ANTON STRELEZKIL—The piano recital by Anton Strelezki at Metzerott hall last night was listened to by a small but delighted eudi- ence. The program included a wide range of composition from Bach to Rubinstein, and im all the numbers Mr. Strelezke displayed his re- markable execution, his intelligent reading, and his power of endurance. Tue Battie or Bout Rex.—The Cyclorams company will in a very short time use a phono- graph for the delivery of the lecture upon their great picture of the “Battle of Bull Kun” now on exhibition at their building corner of 15th street and Ohio avenue. The phonograph is selected because its utterances will be audible from all points of the platform and will be ailable at all times. A Mvsicar anp Rarnsow Fere will be held at the Washington City Orphan asylum this and to-morrow evenings for the benefit of the cook- ing class. The operetta of “Red Riding Hod and the kitchen garden drill will be ren each evening. Refreshments from 6 to 10. Cuvgcu or Our Farner.—A concert will be given at the Church of Our Fether next Priday ht, in which the following will partici Me e Morsell, Henry Kabir, Messrs. Herndon Ernest Szemyleni, Elphonso Youngs, Whipple, Whittake: isses Florence Georgie Metzger, Anita Hendie, Mrs. and a quartette from the Franz Abt club. Tae Mar QvEEN axp CoLLogvy or Nations will be given by the papile of Miss Julia Maedel at National Rifles’ on Friday even- ing next, which will be a unique and attractive entertainment, a A Warning to Pistol-Carriers. Last night between 9 and 10 o'clock a party of young negroes were on L street, between 20th and 2ist streets, engaged in boisterous and disorderly conduct. The men and women were hugging each other when Special Officer n appeared and attempted to ar rest them, wwe one of them drew a re- volver and fired a shot at the officer. S.A Banks was the member of the eon etna had a loaded “4-4 ments on ns who carry pistols, and said he the dangerous habit, if possi- le, by imposing the maximum ity.
