Honey, the young woman who created an excitement at the government print- ing office last Friday by using chloroform after she had »een at the Police Court, made her ap- pearance in the Police Court this morning, charged by John F. Beute, « friend of her hus- band, with making threats against him. The young woman smiled when Judge Miller asked eute, “Are you afraid of this woman?” “I ain't exactly afraid of her,” he replied, “but I don’t know what she might do.” Lawyer Nordlinger, who appeared for Mrs. Honey, accused the witness of bringing this ease to assist her husband in the divorce case, but the witness denied it. “It is spite-work on the part of the prosecut- ing witness,” said counsel. ‘He was put out of her house for causing trouble in the family, and now he is trying to get even with her.” “Can you prove it?” asked Beute. “Yes, I can,” interrupted Mrs. Honey. ALLEGED THREATS. It was explained that when Mrs. Honey was on her way nome from court last Friday she fainted, and was carried into Ellis’ cigar store, on H street. and it was there that Beute charged the threats were made. Frank Camp- bell, who was in the cigar store, remembered hearing Mrs. Honey say she could die with ood grace if she could geteven with John Beate and Dan O'Leary, who, she said, were a cause of all her trouble. fom H. Judge Miller did not think that there was any danger of the woman killing anybody. “No, sir,” said Mrs. Honey; I think him too much beneath me to stain my bands with his blood. Sit of vestibuled es New York in i “I hope THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, YESTERDAY’S 3 APPOINTMENTS. Those of Lew Wallace and Beverly Tucker as Haytian Envoys Withdrawn., The President last “evening made the follow- ing appointments: Beverly Tucker, of West Virginia, and Lewis Wallace, of Indiana, to be special envoys plenipotent of the United States to Hayti; Hiram Smith, jr., of Cameron, Mo., to be the first deputy commissioner of pensions; Benjamin M. Thomas, of Santa Fé, N. M., to be secretary of New Mexico; Robert S. Anderson, of Baker City, Oreg., to be a com- missioner in and for the district of Alaska, to reside at Oonalashka; Hal. J. Cole, of Spokane Falis, Wash. Ter., to be agent for the Indians of the Colville agency in W: Territory. To be registers of land offices: Alexander Lynch, of Florida, at Gainesville, Fla.; Dorus M. Fox, of Des Moines, Iowa, at Des Moines, Towa; John M. Hodge, of Abilene; Kan., at Salina, Kan.; John T. Apperson, of Oregon City, Oreg., at Oregon City, Oreg.; Patrick Raleigh, of Little Rock, Ark., at Littis Rock, Ark.; Her- bert Brown, of Arizona, at Tucson, Ariz. To | be receivers of public moneys: Neen J. ban a man, of Florida, at Gainesville, Fla.; John Scott, of California, at Shasta, Cal. The appointments of Beverly Tucker and Lew. Wallace to be special envoys to Hayti were, almost immediately after their announcement, withdrawn as being premature. Hiram Smith, appointed to be first deput commissioner of pensions, is a one-armed sol- dier who served during the late war with the first Vermont artillery. He has a good record, but never reached the grade of a commissioned officer, He went west after the war and has lived in Missouri most of the time since. He has been department commander of the G. A. RB. of Missouri, A POLITICAL CYCLONE — APPOINTMENTS WITR- DRAWN. It was evident yesterday afternoon that a storm was brewing on the political horizon. The cloud was a small one; at first no larger than a human hand—Beverly Tucker’s hand— but as soon as Tur Star came out and an- nounced that the appointment of Mr. Tucker as one of the Haytian commission was prac- tically decided upon the entire sky became darkened. Three hours later the announce- ment was made officially and then the howl began. A few premonitory groans reached the White House within thirty minutes, and inside ofan hour there was a positive howl from a number of prominent Union men. They in- sisted that Mr. Tucker's record on the Aaa border during the war was one which would not stand even a cursory examination, They re- ferred, with extremely vigorous denunciation to Tucker's connection with such ardent Knights of the Golden Circle as “Jake” Thomp- son, Clement C. Clay, George M. Sanders and J. P. Holcombe and recalled the dastardly anti-Union plots in which those persons were charged with being concerned. Then the President withdrew not only the name of Tucker, but also that of Wallace. It was put forth that the announcenent of the appoint- ments was premature. Gen. Lew Wallace was a member of the court which convicted Mrs. Surratt, Atzerodt, Payne, Herold and their ‘accomplices; all indicted with Beverly Tucker and others for plotting to kill President Lincoln and to perform other mur- derous deeds, THE INDICTMENT AGAINST BEVERLY TUCKER. The opposition to the appointment of Beverly Tucker on the Haytian commission has resur- rected the following indictment against him. The records of the War department contain the following charge against David E. Herold, Geo. A. Atzerodt, Lewis Payne, Michael 0” ‘Laughlin, Edward Spangler, Samuel Arnold, Mary E. Surratt fs pee A. The case was investigated by Police- man Hamilton, who caused Doyle’s arrest. The store was entered by breaking the fastening over the door. Among the things taken was about 10 in small change.
