The Knights of Labor appealed to the last legislature for the enactment of certain laws in the interest of the workingmen and organized labor. These bills ail failed to pass, some of them being vigorously opposed by capitalists and corporations. One. bi which was especially urged by labor organiza- tions, was to prohibit the payment of laborers in store checks. BURNED A Baptist Minister and Several of His Family Perish. The residence of Rev. F.C. Clarke, a Bap- tist minister, two anda half miles from Tunis station, on the Virginia Beach railroad, was burned at midnight Wednesday night, and five persous perished in the flames, The victims, | whose bodies were charred almost beyond recognition, were the Rev. Mr. Clark, one of his sons, Miss Pullen, a school teacher of Shiloh, Va., and a niece. Mr. Clarke's wife and their oldest son and daughter made their escape. The minister, after lowering his wife from a window, went into another part of the house for his children, and perished in trying to save the boy, who died with him.
