INCREASE IX THE POPULATION OF SUBURBAN COMMUNITIES—IMPROVEMENTS OF ROADS—NEW HOUSES GOING UP IN VARIOUS SECTIONS—REAL ESTATE NOTES AND COMMENTS. The weather has not been favorable for work in the suburbs. Still there has been a good deal of activity. It is not expected that there will be a very lively market for suburban real estate this year. What is perhaps of more sub- stantial interest is the fact that a number of new houses are going up and improvements are being made. The suburban population is increasing and there are constant additions to the little communities which now form such pleasing features of the country about Washing- ton. Along the lines of the various railroads leading out of the city gangs of men, can be seen at work making new} streets or building houses. On the Baltimore and Potomac road in addition to the settlements already established sprepara- | AT THE BAR OF JUSTICE. A Busy Day in the Criminal Court. In the Criminal Court, Judge Bradley, this morning, the foliowing proceedings took place: James Thomas, arraigned for assaulting a Police officer March 28, plead not guilty, Wm. Harria Wm. Winston and Daniel Mumford, ar- raigned for house-breaking in the daytime (at the stable of J, A. Boyland) March 28, pleaded not guilty. John Butler, a colored boy convicted of per- jury in the case of John Young, tried for as- sault on appeal in December, was called up for sentence. The judge said that it was his duty to impose such a penalty as to warn and deter others, He imposed a sentence of five years imprisonment in the Albany penitentiary. In the case of Wm. Moore alias Brookey Moore, convicted of grand larceny in stealing an overcoat from John A. Staffel, the motion for a new trial was granted. The defendant then pleaded guilty to petit larceny, and the court imposed a sentence of fine of #50 and six months in jail. In the case of Wm. Jackson, indicted with H tions are being made for others. At Kiver- dale, which is on the Washington branch of the | Baltimore and Ohio, the old Calvert place i: | being subdivided. New houses are going up at other points on this road and there is marked | activity manifested. At the various points along the Metropolitan branch of the Baltimore and Ohio road there is considerable work being done. Eckington, which is an addition to the city, is putting on city airs and streets and sidewalks and the further con- veniences of sewers and water are being intro- duced. A number of new houses are going up at Brooks, and nature is doing her part in developing the trees which have been set out. ‘The new hotel which is being erected opposite Forest Glen is nearing completion, and a num- ber of cottages are springing up around it. At Takoma there is said to be some twenty houses past hi of erection, while new churches and other municipal enterprises of this ambi- tious and growing settlement are being estab- lished with surprising rapidity. At Knowles there is a good deal of building, and when prone go up to camp-meeting in the summer it would not be surprising if they should find quite a town at that point. Some honses are being erected at Garret Park, and a gi force of men are at work in continuing the macadamizing of the roadways and in setting out trees and shrubbery. Along the Washington and Ohio road, as well as in other places about the city which can only be reached by carriage roads, there is a marked activity which gives promise of a great future for the suburbs of the city.
