4 THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON KITH AND KIN OF WASHINGTO:! Who were Invited to the Dedication of the Washington Monument. This comprehensive list of the living rela- tives of Gen. Washington is compiled from the list of those to whom invitations were sent to attend the dedication of the national Washing- ton monument im 188. The commission ap- pointed by Congress to report a proper pro- gram for the occasion to take charge of the dedicating exercises endeavored as far as practicable to recognize and compliment the kith and kin of the illustrious Washington by sending to them invitations to witness the ceremonies, The names here presented were collected by Dr. Toner while in the discharge of his duty asa member of that commission, and who, with the instinct of an historian, pre- served them. It is not claimed that the list is complete or even includes the names of all the relatives of Washington to whom invitations were extended, but ouly those which were pre- served with their address. Had more of the kath and kin been discovered or disclosed themselves to the commission they would also have been invited on that occasion. The fre- quent reference to the matter of invitations to the relatives of the family to which the great Washington belonged to attend the centennial of the inuaguration of the first President of tne United States to be observed in the city of New York, April 30, 1839, makes this list particularly interesting just now. It is by far the most extensive of the living relatives of Washington that has been brought together. A few names not connected by blood or in- termarriage with the Washington stock appear in the list. These are the regents of Mount Vernon and three or four non-official persons to whom it was deemed proper to extend the compliment of an invitation. This list, to ves the post-oftic ofeach individual, und shows how widely the Washington blood is distributed throughout the United States. nah Alexander, Charlestown, W. Va.
