Ecclesiastical Ceremonies that Lead up tothe Easter Festival. INTERESTING AND IMPRESSIVE HELD IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCHES AND WHAT THEY @0OD FRIDAY SOLEMNITIES. SERVICES TO BE AND EPISCOPAL cCOMMEMORATE— The immediate ecc «tical ceremonies that lead up to the feast of Eastertide in the Catho- hie church and in the Church of England, are interesting and most impressive. The services of each day commemorate the trial, condemna- tion and death « jour given in the gos- pel accounts. There is much disputation as to the terms used in designating the separate weeks of the fortnight that precedes the Easter Sunday. In the early days of the church the week preceding Palm Sunday was called Passion week, because in those days were the prefigura- tion or beginning of the sufierings of Christ. The liturgical name for the week following Paim Sunday is Hebdoma major. It is,ofticially, the great week of the church, and “Holy Week” . there will be in the asses at 6, 6:30, 7, and9 Ferial office, the service for d; confessions will be heard d the Tenebrm service at 8 The Tenebre service of the anting of the Catholic @’clock, that day, in the « in th vening. ON HOLY THURSDAY solemn high mass will be celebrated in the Catholic churches at 8 o'clock, after which there will be the vession to the respository. Tenebre ats in the.evening andat St, Matthew's ebareh Rev. F. J. Kerwick will deliver a sermon on the Last Supper. Only one mass is said in ewch church. ‘Ihe procession of the Eucharist is one of the notible ceremonial of the Roman ebhurch. GooD FRIDAY is the fast kept in memory of our Saviour’s sufferings upon the cross in the week that is called in the dictionaries and encyclopedias | Passion week, but in the church communions | Holy week. It is also called great Friday. At | St. Matthew's, the services begin at 8 o'clock, | Way of the cross office at 2:30, Tenebre and | sermon on the Passion of our Lord by Rev. Dr. Corrigan at 5. The church is silent save for prayers and the low murmuring of chants, THE ALTARS ARE DRAPED IN BLAc! Tn St. Jobn’s services are held at 3:30 and 11 Friday morning and at 4 in the afternoon. In St. John's chapel, on Virginia avenue, Dr. Pyne | will conduct a service during the hours of our | Saviour's passion upon the cross from 12 to 3. It consists of litanies, prayers, hymns and meditations and short instructions upon hi last words. There will be a service at St. Mary eburch also. Great taste and ingenuity is displayed in the | arrangement of these repositories which are | Visited by the faithful on Good Friday, it being | incumbent upon every good Catholic to visit as many as possible, saying prayers in silence be- fore each. Sometimes there are representa- tions of the Saviour’s birth, the stable, the in- fant Christ, St. Joseph, the Virgin Mary and the wise men from the East being shown by figures or paintings, while in every case there are elabo- rate floral decorations, cut flowers, growing plants and palms being brought into requisi- tion. The whole is brilliantly lighted by many candles and produces an effect well calculated to stimulate religious feeling. SATURDAY 18 THE DAY in which our Lord lay inthe tomb. On this day also are chanted the wailing Tonebrw in memory of the darkness that overspread the earth at the death of Christ. The low lament of the Miserere, the darkness of the altars the sadness of all the services all contrast with the joyful music. the light flowers and gladness of the Easter celebrations. An interesting and beautiful ceremonial is the blessing of the new fire that is lighted in the sanct lamp in Catholic churches, and also of the puschai candles that are burned at all services. Con- fessions are heard almost continuously in the Catholic churches on Saturday in pre tion for the communion that all the faithful take on Easter Sunday. The ladies of the Altar society, of which Madame Boneparte is the president, will decorate most magnificently the altar and tory at St. Matthew's for iter day. The calendar at St. Matthew's for Easter Sunday in- cludes masses at7 and 9; children’s mass in lower chapel at 9; solemn high mase at 11, when Bev. Dr. pelle will deliver a sermon upon resurrection. When the reading was concluded Col. At this Judge Hubbell requested that the court adjourn until Thursday morning at 11 o'clock, in order to give him an opportunity to talk to the witnesses for the defense.
