You have seen a waiter remove moisture and refuse edibles from a restaurant counter. A rapid folding up of the towel, a sweeping semi- ness, The same general plan was used a night or so ago in what is probably the best-known all-night restaurant in the city. The gentle- man who for the nonce assumed the functions of the waiter is well known in the local liter- ary world, but the individual whom he used as & counter-wiper was evidently a stranger. The incident materalized is something like this: CRITICISM FOLLOWED BY A CATACLYSM. It was about 1a. m., and some thirteen or fourteen gentlemen, a few of them morning newspaper men, were patronizing the restau- rant to the extent of a light supper previous to seeking their respective couches. Enter two strangers. They order something, and while it is being prepared they make remarks about the manner in which the literary man above- referred to is disposing of his food. The 1. m. hears their remarks and informs them that he will not allow them to criticise him. The heavier stranger offers to throw the 1. m. through a neighboring mirror and the 1. m. ntimates that it would take about three ath- letes like unto the heavier stranger to perform that disastrous feat. They clinch, Then the 1. m, upsets every table and chair in the long room with the person of the heavier and more pugnacions stranger, and concludes the act by doubling him up, throwing him on the counter and then using him asa substitute for the waiters’ towel WIPING UP THE COUNTER WITH HIM. In about five seconds the counter is clean. The turkeys, the chickens, the hams, the crabs, the oysters (on which a huge block of ice has j been’ placed to prevent them opening their mouths and giving away their age), the salad, the cold slaw, the lobsters and the cracker: bowls, to say nothing of the crockery and glass- ware, cover the floor with a thousand frag- nents, By this time all is confusion, The jl. m. still flourishes the salad-stained form of heavier stranger, but at the request of a few friends he releases his grip and allows the unfortunate remains of the interruption of his meal to gather themselves together and to pro- ject their disint ated unity into the darkness of the night through a side door, hatle breathless and fightless, L. m. turns a table Je up, selects a chair wi three legs and a a that anything he group of scared w, please.” Twenty-five rsof company ©, Washington nt Infantry battalion, competed last night for the honor of representing the company in the individual drill for the Marion Rifles’ m After nearly three-quarters of an hour's hard work Sergeant B, P. A NOVEL BY J. A. FROUDE. THE TWO CHIEFS OF DUNBOY. TO-NIGHT AT 8, LAST APPEARANCE OF ‘The Peerless Artist and Favorite, An Irish romance of the Last Century, By Jawrs a HT t Ee ANTHONY Frovpe. 12mo, paper, 50 cents; cloth, ERK HHH 81.50. RE H ‘Mr, Fronde is ss fascinating in romance as in history. His novel has all the absorbing adventurous interest of a story by Scott. It is crowded with dramatic inci- dent, and its portrayal of the fierce passions and pic- turesque characters of the Ireland of the Eighteenth Century is as powerful as it is vivid” The style has ail Mr. Froude’s accustomed brilliance and charm, and the historical significance of the book, added to its rare qualities as fiction, makes it a masterpiece of the frst rank.
