The subjects of the various prize essays open to the students of Georgetown university have been announced as follows: For the Philodemic’ prize essay, “The Atti- tude of Longfellow toward Catholicity, as Re- vealed in his Poetical and Prose Works;” for the Mercier prize oration, “The Character of Wolfe and Montcalm;” for the Morris historical prize essay, ‘‘The Norsemen in America.” The Mercier prize is a medal, the gift of the Hon. Honoré Mercier, lately prime minister to Canada, Mr. Mercier, upon a visit to the col- lege last year, donated the medal in commemo- ration of the centenary of the college. Mr. Talmadge A. Lambert, of this city, has given a — of #100 for the best essay on Christian loctrine. In addition to these prizes there is the Toner Scientific medal, given to the stu- dent who presents the best collection of spec’ mens in some branch of natural science, the specimens to be collected, determined and ar- ranged by the student presenting them. White. the chiropodist, died suddenly yesterday afternoon at his office, 1416 Pennsyi- oplexy. During the day he was apparently in his usttal health. In the af- ternoon his son, who was associated with him professionally, left the office, and upon return- ing about 3 o'clock found his father lying un- conscions on the floor. A physician was sum- moned. but when he arrived lite was extinct. Dr. White had suffered for some time with a heart trouble. He was fifty-five years old, and was well known in this city, having been en- gaged in Practice here for many years. The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon, and the remains will be buried in the Congressional cemetery. —_——__. Superintendent Alvey, of the Balti- more and Chio railroad, went out to the fire on one of the shifting engines and removed some freight cars that were m danger of being con- sumed by the flames. The Boston Sym- phony orchestra, sixty-strong, will be the great attraction. This fine organization starts ona western tour the last of April and will close their season here. Mr. Gericke closes his five years of service as conductor with this season, so his last appearances in America will be here, The list of soloists is not yet complete, but among those already announced are Mme.
