PERPLEXED CONGRESSMEN. How They Are Worried by Applicants for Office. PROBLEMS WHICH REPUBLICAN MEMBERS ARE REQUIRED TO SOLVE SATISFACTORILY IF THEY WOCLD HOPE TO RETAIN THEIR SEATS—THEIR INFLUENCE WITH THE PRESIDENT. If an extra session of Congress should be as- sembled suddenly the republicans would have a large majority of those ready to respond to the roll-call, But few of the republicans of the House have gone home. On the contrary, a number of the new members of the Fifty-first Congress have appeared at the capital. In one House mail route, which is a fair sample of the rest, there were fifty odd members, and of these forty-three are still in the city. Thirty-four are republicans and nine only are democrats, Those who have gone are all, or nearly all, Fs fet rd i i r i f i | it g i democrats, The representatives of the party by them. oRan im power are remaining here to look after the Prag rer afew Ree Becg grein ‘tronage, chiefly, and th occupied in easily only preparation is a course Jousideting ‘bow dbsy ‘can’ best distribete the of twel These are about an hour few offices they can get out of the neral divi- ‘among the many applicants who are press- ing for place. — BEPUBLICAN CONGRESSMEN AND THE PRESIDENT.
