Nine wee ago in February we first asked the patronge of the Washington public in a store on Market Space 25x 100 feet. Today we have a =< five-story building containing over 50,000 feet of selling space. Then we employed about fifty assistants, to-day we have about 350. Then we had one delivery wagon; to-day we have seven. Your patronage has been the lever with which the store has been raised to its present position. The cardinal principles upon which we established our business, and upon which it has prospered, are: “Equity, liberality, one price, best intrinsic values and money refunded to all dissatisfied purchasers”—and these principles will be conscientiously ad- hered to in the future. Standing upon the threshold of our tenth business year, more ripe in experience and better acquainted with your diversified requirements in our line of trade, we see even greater achievements in the future, and no efforts will be spared by us to make the next nine years bear equally as good, if not better fruit than the nine preceding years. Strangers in the city are cordially invited to visit our establishment. Roam through it, ask questions, and make yourselves generally at home. It is a rule of the house not to urge customers to buy, so you will not be importuned. For the benefit of strangers we add that our stock comprises general Dry Goods, Notions, Fancy Articles, etc., and . no lower prices for equal qualities prevail anywhere—in this, or any city. We have opened the greater portion of our spring stock especialy for this occasion, and strangers wishing to pur- chase a new dress, or a “souvenir” of their visit to Washington, are offered ample opportunity to satisfy their desires in this line at our establishment. Mr. Arthur Romain, president of the National union benefit association, and one of its organ- izers, has disposed of his interest therein, and has been succeeded by Capt, Webster as presi- lent. A dead white male infant was found at 24th and L streets last evening. J. L. Dyer, driver of the Union transfer Hale's company, fell from his wagon on Pennsylvania | avenue, between 9th and 10th streets, last night, and was slightly injured. The outgoing train on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad, at 10:45 last night, ran into a coal-oil wagon with a tank at Boundary street, demolishing it. In the Criminal Court yesterday, Ellen Chase was convicted of manslaughter in causing the death of Anna Wheeler, is preforming an op- eration upon her in June last, CHEAP LODGING HOUSES. A “Shake Down” for Ten Cents and an Entire Cot for Half a Dollar. The fact that many persons come here from a distance and expect to be guests of the public at large is shown about the depots, where a member of the committee on public comfort is seated ata table to assign visitors to various hotels and boarding houses. The price for board and lodgings ranges from $2 upward. Among those who have applied for cheap board were half a dozen men from Tennessee, They called on a member of the committee on public comfort yesterday and wanted to find good rooms and board. They were particularly anxious to get a place where they would be given three square meals a day. They would not have objected to a front room on the Avenue. When told where they could get a good place for $2.50 per day one of the men looked like he was going to faint. “I wonder if he thinks we are millionaires,” he said, when the clerk named the price. There are many persons who come here ex- pecting cheap lodgings. They do not seem to understand that prices are generally increased on such occasions, and expect to get accom- modations at the regular rates. There are a number of cheap lodging and boarding houses in the vicinity of Ist and B streets, near the capitol, where the regular price for lodging ranges FROM TEN TO FIFTY CENTS. Even in these places, or many of them, the price has advanced from one to three hundred percent. During ordinary times it is said that & poor man, even if he has only a nickel, can c accommodations at some of these lodging- ouses. They are kept by old ladies, who take pains to see that none but respectable people occupy their beds, and, if desired, the lodger cau get a cheap breakfast in the morning. The lodger who is =auee to pay ten cents fora bed for the night when there are not many strangers in the city who are willing to pay more, is given a “shake down” in the arret. What the average traveler who frequents these houses understands by a “shake-down” is an excuse for a bed con- structed of ordinary pine timbers and made stationary, so that there is no danger of its proving a “break down.” This structure is covered with an immense bag filled with straw, on which there is room for a dozen or more to sleep. Each lodger is provided with a blanket, because THE “SHAKE DOWN” APARTMENT IS NOT HEATED. On the floor under that apartment an in- crease of five cents is'made on the price of each lodger. On this floor each lodger has a cot to himself, which is the only advantage over the gatret, except that some escaping heat from floor below might occasionaliy enter through the crevices. By paying 25 cents a cot can be obtained ina room where there are not more than two or three cote. Fifty cents will get any bed in the house, and there will be feathers in the mattress and pil- low and clean white sheets will add to the gen- eral appearance and cétofort of the sleeping quarters. During the present ceremonies prices have been increased and the proprietors expect to make enough money to refit their houses, The meals furnished, while not the best in the city, are by no means the worst. The cook- ing is good,”and what is put on the table is always well prepared. Bread, butter, and coffee are furnished for 10 cents, and for an ad- ditional nickel eggs or meat is added. For 25 cents a good meal of meats, vegetables, coffee, and desert is furnished, es Spectat Trarx on THe WasHINaToN AND OnI0 Drvistoy Prepmont Arr Lixe.—For the accom- modation of the suburban patrons on the W. and O. division, the Piedmont Air Line will run @ special train for the oe on Monday, March 4, leaving Round Hill, 7:15 a, m.; Lees- burg, 7:56 a. m.; Sterling, 8:20 a. m.; Falls Church, 9:14 a. m.; arriving Washii mn, 9:55 am.
