INTERESTING DEVELOPMENTS IN THE PARNELL CASE, Mr. Soames, solicitor for the London Times, testified before the Parnell commission in Lon- don yesterday that he visited Dublin in May, 1833, in quest of evidence. At the offices of Mr. Alexander Morphy, crown solicitor for Kerry, he had an interview with a person who was introduced to him as a former employe in the office of the league and who pro- duced a slip bearing the signature of Miss Anna Parnell, specimens of Mr. Patrick Egan’s handwriting, and a bundle of documents, which, the witness inspected at length. He copied some of these documente and made notes of others. Witness arranged that the docu- ments should be gee to London, and they were brought here on Whit Monday, 1838, and embodied in an affidavit produced during the trial of the suit of O'Donnell against Walter Nicaragua, and E. D. Woodruff, of Auburn, N. Y., called on Gen, Harrison, but only remained a few moments. Mr. W. W. Joseph Rosenkratz and Joseph Weinstein, the three New York boys who had shipped with them as of the constellations are useful and valuable as @ matter of celestial geography to those who follow the study far enough really to need such aids in locating the heavenly bodies, but of what earthiy use, interest, or value is it to the ordinary scholar? Beyond a general knowledge of the half a dozen constellations which have by name a place in literature the pupil does not even derive any satisfaction, even the most su- perficial, from the laboriously learned and easily forgotton string of names which makes up so large a portion of the contents of most text books on astronomy. The student who passes days, weeks and months in that busy idleness known as “analyzing” flowers has doubtless given the time to a pleasant strictly moral form of amusement, but the mind would have been as well exercised, re- sults would have been as valuable, and process quite as pleasant and m had the same labor be expended in solving the mas and riddles of the puzzle de juvenile magazine, The chief that in one case distaste arising from guessing, wherein the mind would act freely and spontaneously, The principle of modern education is appa- rently to take the least ible quantity of knowledge. mix it with the for libel.
