HE WAS SOME REMARKS TO MAKE ABOUT DANCING AND THE INAUGURAL BALL, Ina sermon on the comparative refinement of modern aids to sinfulness, delivered last night at Hamline M. E. church, the Rev. Dr. Naylor spoke of the terpsichorean science of to-day as compared with the dancing of fifty years ago. “Its refinement,” said he, “has made it more attractive but none the less sin- ful, and now it is so Ceca 4 its hold upon us that every four years American nation dances. So powerfal is its grip that on the 4th of Mareb next a great, godly man, the greatest ‘an in the land, the leader of the people, an der in the Presbyterian church, a pure man hom I have known for twenty years, will either offend the nation or he will have to lend his presence to the inaugural ball, where he will ee nothing more edifying than thousands People, in peac hopping around on the floor. “There are two thi tor, “of which Iam that mac’ which cost millions which is no more = frames, porcelain paint- |: A Man’s Desperate but Unsuccessful Actempe te Blow his Head OTe Shortly after the breakfast bell rang at the marine barracks yesterday morning, and most of the marines had entered the mess-room, they were startled by hearing the report of a rifle fired in one of the sleeping rooms. Dr. aes on Subject of Current and Eternal Interest. To the Editor of Te EVENING Star: Those who were present in the parlors of the Y. M.C. A. building yesterday afternoon en- joyed a rare privilege in listening to athought- ful and practical address by President Welling, of the Columbian University. He chose for his theme correct _ discernment of religious truth, and showed ‘by many quotations from the Bible how slow the ancients were in discerning the great truths of the scriptures, and how inclined they were to lace a literal interpretation upon’ the Bes of the Bible. He maintained that the leading object of the Saviour in using parables ‘was not to impress facts upon his hearers, but to test their power of discerning the great truths that form the foundation of faith. Among the dangers that now beset a discern- ment of truth in religion, the speaker said, are carnal feelings, too literal interpretation, sluggishmese in searching for truth, and acarp- ing, hypercritical spirit in listening to the ex- yanding of the scriptures, and in the endeavor TS question the principles therein contained. the large number of young men present lis- tened most attentively to Dr. Welling’s address and carried away thoughts which will doubt- less prove of the greatest benefit to them in the moral and religious life. The Y. M. C. A. organization is doing an amount of good to the young men and boys of Washington which few appreciate. The men who manage this noble association are earnest, | faithful, practical ‘istians, and their organi- zation deserves not only our sincere admira- tion, but also our warm and constant support.
