WASHINGTON: December 17, 158%. Braz for the week ending December 15, 1888: Moxpar, December 10, 1888... Isolemnly swear that the above is a true and correct statement of the circulation of Tax Evenixe Stag for the week ending December 16, 1888. F. B. Noyes, Treasurer Evening Star Newspaper Co. Sworn to and subscribed before me this seventeenth day of December, A. D. 1888. Jouy T. C. Cianx, Notary Public. io The use of the pension building for the pur- poses of the inauguration ball postpones the removal of the local post-office to that build- ing at least until after March 4th, 1889. Con- gress ought now to take some action which will postpone this removal indefinitely. The post-office ought not to be located at a point so inconvenient to the public as the north side of Judiciary square even for a day. As soon as possible a site should be selected and purchased near to the center of the city’s business, and on main lines of travel easily accessible to the public. On this site a post-office should be erected worthy of the nation and@its capital. The Pen- sion building is too remote; the use of Judici- ary square is objectionable as an injurious diversion from the purposes for which this park is held in trust by the government; and even the square adjacent to Judiciary square on the west, which the House com- mittee favors, is not as close to the center of business and population or as easily reached by the public as would be the case in a model post-office site. The hope of the District is that the two houses of Congress will speedily indicate their preferences in re- spect toa site, and thatthe conference com- mittee which is sure to result will with like promptness sink differences of opinion and compromise upon a. central and convenient location. The capital’s need of post-office ac- commodations is urgent. ee Not satisfied with dumping pet dogs, and tame bears, and chairs, and canes, and other small trash, alive and dead, upon his piazza, some of the zealous'friends of the President- elect have shipped to him, all the way from braska, a sod cabin. Now that it has ar- rived at Indianapolis nobody knows what to do with it. Built on a flat car, it is likely to drop to pieces if an attempt is made to remove it; and the only thing alternative of letting it be destroyed after all this journey is to side-track the car and leave the cabin in the freight yard somewhere till its fate can be decided. If General Harrison should presently receive the trunk of one of the Mariposa big trees from his admirers in California he need not be sur- prised. It would be of about as much use to him as the sod hut from Nebraska. and quite as appropriate; for, surely, the last person to whom one would think of sending the gift of a poor dwelling would be a man who had just been chosen by several million of his country- men to live in the most eagerly sought resi- dence in the United States. an ‘The proposition to change the name of West Virginia to “Kanawha” is a good one, and it is pleasant to be assured that a great many people im the state, if not a present majority, are in favor of it. If it ean be done by consent of its inhabitants the change ought to be made, but not by any other authority, so far as a state now in the Union is concerned. With terri- tories proposing to come in, the principle is however different. In that case the people of the whole country have a right to be heard on thie subject; and it is beyond question that the popular voice is against the admission of any state or country which duplicates the name of another, having only the prefix of “north,” “east,” “south” or “west” as s means of identification. The country, settled and un- settled, is rich enough in suitable and eupho- nious proper names to furnish acceptable names for all the states likely to become mem- bers of the Union, without resorting to repeti- tion in any case; and a duplicate. in whole or in part, ought not to be permitted in any in- stance, no matter what the local expressions of wishes or feeling may be. Neither should the name of an individual be given to a state; and in this exclusion Tux Stax desires to be under- stood as including even the august names of Washington and Lincoln, which have been pro- posed in some quarters. i The £gytian question is whether England shall surrender Suakim in exchange for Emin Pasha and Stanley. The answer probably is that she will not if she can ransom them more cheaply; and that she will not trade at all until she is certain that the party of the second part possesses the living property which it is pro- posed to deliver. While the dickering is in progress, the situation of the captives, if they are really Stanley and Emin Pasha, will be one of anxiety and danger. Panaverms Sronz OPEN UNTIL 9 O'CLOCK P.M.
