FIFTY THOUSAND HANDKERCHIEFS. ae e It sounds incredible, yet ‘tis true. This The denials which Representative Henderson made in the House yesterday for the Commis- sioners, as coming from them, in reference tothe purchase of school sites are very much broader than any made directly by the Commissioners themselves, either in their newspaper explana- tion or in their statement read in the House. In fact, the Commissioners have not publicly denied any essential statement in respect to the method of such purchases. They admitted that the District bought through egents and that there was no authority of law to pay them. They stated that these agents of the District got their pay out of the sellers of property, and that the Commissioners, not paying them, were not responsible for the character of their charges. In reply to the statement that nominal intermediate pur- chasers intervened, under the method employed, between the owners of the property and the District, thus complicating and possibly weak- ening the chain of title, they replied that they had confidence in their legal advisers who passed upon the validity of the title. But Mr. Henderson now represents the Commissioners as saying that ‘‘in no instance had the purchase been made by A acting as an agent for the Com- missioners, and the title passed to him, and then the property conveyed to the District; * * * that they had, however, employed agents to obtain information as to what sites they could buy for school purposes.” It was not asserted in the statements respecting purchases of the sites of public buildings that the District’ agent inserted his own name as intermediate between the owner and the District, it the facts pointed strongly to the conclusion that there was a nominal intermediate pur- YOUR INSPECTION SOLICITED.
