He em- TREATED TO A SURPRISE PARTY IN REGARD TO MIS FRIEND PLATT. The interest in Indianapolis centers in the distinguished visitors which it is expected Gen. | Harrison will receive this week. Both Vice- President-elect Morton and Senator Quay are booked to go west. The New York Herald says | that William Copeland Wallace, Congressman- | elect from the third congressional district in Brooklyn, will accompany Vice-Presidont-elect Levi P. Morton on his visit to Gen. Benjamin | Harrison at Indianapolis. Mr. Wallace will be | thus honored because he will be the only rep- resentative of the republican party in this state | from the region south of the Harlem river. It! is understood that it will be Mr. Wallace’s first duty to present to Gen. Harrison the claims of | Thomas C. Platt for Secretary of the Treasury, on the ground that Kings county did more than any other locality of the same size in the whole = . from Oregon to Florida, for elec- | of the republican candidate. PREPARING FOR MB. AND MRS. MORTON. The Sun special says: Mrs. Harrison is still busily engaged in getting the house to rights for the Vice-President elect and Mrs. Mortor who are expected on Wednesday. No definite arrangements have yet been made as to the | social events that will mark the visit. There will be open house for all callers at the Harri- son residence, as there is all the time, in fact, but it is doubtful whether there will be any for- mal reception. ‘The trouble is,” said Gen. | Harrison this afternoon, “that if we invite all | —= might wish to come our house would be all to hold them, and if we invite only as bombers as the house will hold, then there would be hard feelings on the part of those not invited. We do not know yet how long Mr. and Mrs. Morton will be with us or what their wishes are, and all the arrangements we are | making are simply to make them as much at | home as possible.’ It is probable a public reception may be ten- dered to Mr. Morton by a committee of citi- | zens, aside from the entertainment at the Har- | rison house. It is also expected that if the guests arrive at a convenient hour they will be | or the Columbia club and escorted to the resi- | dence of Gen. Harrison. Social doings aside, 18 A BIG SURPRISE PARTY in store for Mr. Morton when he gets here and | begins to talk Platt to the President-elect. | ‘This is on the assumption that Mr. Morton will \3 talk Platt. Two men of prominence among the republican leaders here, and said to have close relations with the President-elect, were interviewed separately to-day, and agreed that Gen. Harrison had his mind very firmly fixed on Miller for New York's representative in the cabinet, and that any change which implied the setting aside of Miller against Miller's wishes would be made only in response to the most urgent and forcible reasoning on the art of even the Vice-President-elect. Gen. jarrison, it is said, is inclined to rate very high the share of Mr. Miller in carrying New York, and it is determined that nothing shall be done that will imply any slight upon him. ‘THE STORY ABOUT DANA. The publication of the name of J. L. Smith, the Dana, Indiana, editor, as responsible for the story of Gen. Harrison's alleged remark about the Sun, has led Mr. Robert Pierce, the lawyer, who had charge of Gen. Harrison's bunting trip, to make a statement on the sub- ject. “It is true,” he said this afternoon, ‘that mith, who is the editor. by the way, of a dem- ocratic, and not a republican paper as has been alleged, was present in the parlor of Captain Bates’ house with Gen. Harrison, myself, and one or two others that afternoon after dinner. It was | pl private and social chat, and Smith had no business to repeat any of it out- side, but it would have been no great matter if he had repeated it correctly. But his story of itis all wrong. There was a conversation growing out of a mention of the fact that the town of Dana was named after Charles A. Dana, that even implied that he had the slightest knowlege of the desires of Mr. Dana as to the election or defeat of Mr. Cleveland.” QUAY MUST DO HIS OWN TALKING. The World man says: Gen. Harrison was asked to-day about Quay’s coming. He smiled and said: ‘Well, I let whoever wants to come and see me come, but then, when they get here they must do their own talking.” When Quay comes, and no one knows whether it will be noon or night. there will be one man here who wants to see him before he goes to Harrison's. Major Scanton, of Chicago, who is an ardent Irish-American, has been here at work for Wharton Barker, is waiting yet, and noone doubts it is because he wants to talk to Quay and find out how much bottom there is to the Wanamaker boom. PLACES PROMISED. The Herald's Indianapolis correspondent says: By agreeing to send John C. New abroad and by promising to make Chairman Huston first assistant postmaster-general, the President- elect has the two men to whom he is the most indebted, but for whom it was the most diffi- cult to find places, for which they were suited, Tiere is again some lively gossip cbout i Tadioe re in some live! ly ip about and the cabinet. Baltimore Special to the New York Tribune. Under the new Baltimore and Ohio deal it is now understood that Robt. Garrett will shortly be returned to the directory. The various re- ports recently circulated seem to give color to the statement made by a Baltimore paper that the road is to be run again as a family institu- tion. Gossip continues cancerning a change in the presidency. Chas. F. Mayer, the coal operator, is freely mentioned as President Spencer's successor. Mayer, W. F. Frick, and Jas. Sloan are the accepted leaders of the twelve stockholders’ directors, The other members.of the board are the seven city and the four state directors, who are controled by Senator Gorman, himself a state director. The situation is explained by a prominent banker as being the choice of two evils: ‘Shall the company be run by the Garretts asa family e-ncern or shall it turned into a political machine?” All who are interested in the welfare of the road in a business way prefer the Garretts to the politicians. Mr. Mayer, speaking of t of the rumors concerning the presi . that Mr. Spencer will be re-elected, and coy he was advised of the changes in the directors be- fore they were made public. On the other hand, it is aid that etley the stockholder di- rectors were elected, they have left President Spencer severely alone, so far as imparting to him, as the head of the big rallroed om tion, their business confidences, He noes |* popular among the business men of “altimore, has been praised for his management of the road. From the N. ¥. Star (Sunday). A balloon ascension, under the direction of the Novelty Air Ship company, was made yes- terday afternoon at Coney Island. The inven- tor of the air ship, Mr. Peter C. Campbell, a South Brooklyn jeweler, had engaged Mr. Jas, K. Allen, the professional aeronaut of Provi- dence, R. 1, to make the ascension. Pure oxygen gas was generated on the spot, and at 4 o'clock the balloon was inflated. Mr. Allen stepped into the light car in the center of the air ship, and gave the signal to cut the rope that held it to the earth. With easy motion the airship moved upward amid the applauding shouts of an excited crowd. ‘0 prove the entire command that Mr. Allen had over the airship, Mr. Campbell signaled him to descend after ‘he had reached an alti- tude of 200 feet. He die 0 without the slight- est difficulty, and the balloon C mgriere he _ ecended and settled on the very spot fr which ithad been liberated. Then it sailed away to the height of 600 feet, and there it re- mained stationary for several minutes. Finally, under the direction of the aeronaut, it moved about in different directions.
