All day an immense crowd surged through the store and fifty clerksmade 6,000 sales. The were kept closed all day, only admitting patrons as others out, and while it was estimated that the visitors numbered from 10,000 to 15,000 people, probably twice that number were unable to enter. There was a line iages in front of the building most of the day. Mr. Goldschmid was the recipient of a great number of congratulatory te! and a row of elegant floral designs which were sent him were at the entrance. Business looks bright for this new enterprise.” ‘ I wish to tender my hearty thanks for this more than generous outpouring of my friends and patrons, while to the many who were un- able to secure entrance and proper attention, I desire to offer an apology, toge er with the as- surance that to-day wi 1d me better e to attend to their wants. Gnear Dot Saux Thursday, December 6th, at Tux F, HAVE JUST BROUGHT OUT SOME LINES 1 OF DARK, QUIET MIXTURES AND EN- Rocxvinie, The slaughter house and fixtures of Mr. Rich- ard Hewitt, near Norbeck, on the 7th street pike, were destroyed by fire yesterday morning, about 2 o'clock. On the evening before Mr. Hewitt had killed and dressed five large beeves and hung them in the building for sale to his customers in that part of county. When the fire had gained such headway as tobe without con! it was discovered by those who were first on the scene that a of the meat had been removed, and it is eet that the premises were fired to hide the theft. The slaughter-house was mt to other buildings, but they were saved. The loss is estimated at #400, with no insurance. Mrs. Sarah Benson, wife of Mr. W. H. Ben- son, died at her residence, in Clarksburg dis- trict, on Saturday, in the seventieth year of her age. Mrs. Benson was « member of one of the largest and most influential families of the county, having ‘many relatives both here and in the District. The recent burning of the stables of the Corcoran hotel at this place, by which a large portion of the town was endangered, has aroused a feeling among the people in favor of some arrangement by which such catastrophes may be met. At present the town has no se- curity against fire except what may be accom- plished by buckets of water thrown upon the lames. In the last instance it is but just to say that all worked with a will, the young ladies of the place taking their position at the nearest pumps and ordering the men to carry the water as they pumped it. The large number of col- ored men did all that was possible to do to save the Froperty endangered, for which they have the thanks of the entire community. . Lee Offutt and bride returned to their home here last night after an extended tour through the north, stopping in Philadelphia, New York and other cities.
