Effect of the Lord Sackville Correspond- ence—How the Betting Goes. It is the almost universally-expressed opinion that this canvass has excited an unusually small degree of interest, or at least of agita~ tion, in Washington; but as the day of election approaches partisanship asserts itself, and there is every indication of a lively time for the next ten days. Of late the Lord Sackville let- ter has been the chief topic of political discus- sion. At first some democrats were undeniably alarmed at the possible effect upon the Irish vote. They thought, in the sensitive state of Irish sentiment, another Burchard effect—this = oo atambey who weedy by the three it impression ae uate ~ pte mg Now the democrats talk more boldly about the letter. LOCAL BETTING. There are bets of almost every description offering on Cleveland to-day here in Washing- ton that find no takers. During the past week Mr. Michael Dwyer and Capt. Wm. M. Connor, of New York, have been here with thousands of dollars to stake om the election of the demo- cratic national ticket. The only transactions they could arrange that amounted to ansthing were a bet of $1,000 to $750 and another o' $200 to $180, the odds in both cases being given by the Cleveland backers, Dwyer made the big bet with Mr. Wall, the latter laying his #750 on Harrison. Capt, Connor put up the $200 on Cleveland, inst $180 of Mr. Godfrey's money. Other New Yorkers brought money here to bet on Cleveland, it having been ex- tensively advertised that a Mr. Finley a to back Harrison to the tune of #20,000, thro: Lynn & Wall, but the $20,000 was not f coming. Several eveni: ago Messrs. Frank Ward and W. W. Gould made a bet of $400 to $500, Ward taking the Harrison end. A forfeit of $50 each was put up, the remaining stakes to be placed in the hands of the stakeholder accordi stipulation by 10 o'clock next morning. Be! tag that hour Mr. Ward gave notice that he had decided to surrender his forfeit. Mr. David Haggerty has $500 at his pisce on Pennsyl- vania avenue to go up on Cleveland in sums of or upward. ‘There is also. money still re- — ‘at Shoomaker’s to back the democratic ticket. pS The Death of Paragon. ‘MR, FAIRES SUES FoR $15,000 DAMAGES. CASES REPORTED IN A NEW PLACE—AN APPEAL FOR AID FROM DECATUR. Yellow fever seems to be spreading out to various places in Florida. Postmaster Clark, at Jacksonville, has received official informa- tion of the existence of yellow fever at Bald- win. The weather is very warm at Jackson- ville and showery. There were 16 new cases of fever there on Sunday and $8 deaths. Dr. Caldwell, a volunteer physician at Enterprise, has issued a call for $1,500 for the immediate relief of sufferers there. Egan and Devoy would be among them, a denial which was further confirmed by the other Irish members in the case, Still, from the stress laid by the attorney-general on the American connections of the League, it is evi- dent that he intends to produce what he be- lieves to be important testimony from that side of the water.
