THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: WRDNESsDAY. For Tz Broov. Prev’s Mrix, Texas, June=20. 1888—The Swift ‘Specific Company, Atlanta, Ga—<Gentlemen: One of my children was troubled with rheumatism and boils for about two year. We gave her various kinds medicine, but without profit, and began to despair curing her at all. I was persuaded to try your Swift's Specific. After she had used several bottles the dis- cases all disappeared, and she and healthy girl twelve years old. even the promise of salaried positions in ‘Swempioy im cage of resignation from their present Offices, 1t has converted the District Commissioners ‘from Vigilant defenders of the city against over- ‘ead Wirss to ‘the voluntary apologists fora new ‘98 Of Wires, more dangerous than the telegraph ‘Wires, which constitu:e a large part of the system Watcn im Geference to public opinion they ‘Rave been so anxious to bury. It has so skillfully Raadied the Commissioners that these officials ‘Rot only reverse themselves to the public astoa- ‘shment in their opposition on principle to over- ‘heed wires, but exhibit an additional inconsistency ‘mM professing on the one hand that they have no ‘Might or power to meddie with the corporation's ‘Affairs for the purpose of thwarting its intentions, and tn making themselves the active assistants on he other hand in varrying these Intentions into @Mect, by voluntarily becoming the coun- @eliors of the corporation, and by a Yabored defense of its purposes in a long report to ‘and in personal hearings before the ‘District commitvee. aided by a feeling of pique should tastruct the commitvee form of resolution which should city to the new line of overhead ‘Wires means a general sacrifice of the city's Desuty and safety to this cheap “commercially Practicable” method of railway transportation, ‘The electric corporation evidently expects this re— sult, and the proposition of the District commit- ‘Yee to except the railway wires from the proposed ‘Durial also points to it. A biow will aiso be given to the project of putting underground the exist- Ang wires. If the railway wires with their current at the verge of the certainly fatal point, which ‘Ihave killed horses and mutes in Montgamery and Richmond, are not dangerous, surely not a ‘Word can be said against the telegraph wires with their current of fewer volts, And the drift of the advocates of the railway overhead wires to a de- fense of all overhead wires is not concealed. What ‘ever may be \he decision of Commissioners or Sen— ate in this instance the public verdict is made up. ‘The overhead wires have been convicted in every city as ugiy and dangerous, and must ga. Delays 4m the burial are permissibie only for the purpose of planning a system of conduits which will best serve the public an@ the corporations, and must Rot be utilized to aggravate the evil. The hope of ‘Washington is that Congress will not imitate the Commissioners in the reversal of a wise dectsion. ‘The prohibition of ail overhead wires after Sep- ember 15th and the promise of a general plan of Durial at the next session of Congress shouid be adhered to without exception in favor of anybody. ‘The principal danger to the city ts found in the fact that members of Congress sometimes think ‘hat their whole duty as legislators 1s to be ren- ered to their constituents at home, and that if the interests of the people of Washington in mat- ‘ers of local legisiation conflict with those of a ‘Voting constituent the former must go to the wall, ‘Thus Senator Hoar forgets that in this matter the People of Washington are his real constituenta, and remembers only that a Massachusetts electric company wishes to turn an honest penay, and ‘the beauty and security of this city are as notiiing in conflict with the interests of the ‘Masmachusetts constituent. In the same way, Senator Dawes may be tempted ‘to abjure, in the interest of a Massachusetts cor- poration only, bis expressed views in opposition ‘Woverhead wires. In the same way, in the con- ressional library controversy, the Interests of New York cement and Indiana granite fight against an impartial consideration of what Is best for the capital and the nation. If Congress will Femember that there is as palpabie a breach of faith im betraying to private interests the welfare Of their constituents at the capital as of their con- stituents at home, Washington will not need to fear the perpetuation of overhead wires, —$<——.<——__— ‘The Vermont election, like that which took Place the other day in Arkansas, is not especially significant in its result. Everybody expected the New England state to gorepublican, just as every- ody expected the Southwestern state to continue ‘under democratic control, and hence no one was Gisappotnted. The republican majority in Ver. ‘mont, however, shows a gain of something lke five thousand over that of 1884, and it is evident that the republicans have been doing some vigorous campaign work there with a ‘View to making an effective “straw” showing the way the political wind is blowing. The tariff question seems to have been worked very much to ‘Uheir advantage amougst the wool growers and mill operatives tn that state, and acconding to the ‘New York Heraid the Vermont farmers too have aad the glories of protection seductively painted ‘to them by representations of big prices for eggs, Dutter and poultry. It is apparent that tn Oregon and Vermont the tariff imwue has been decidedly in favor of the Tepublicana. It remains to be seen whether the Fepublicans will be able to utilize it with equal success in states where the interests are more iversifed, and where the enormities of a high tariff have been more fully depicted by democratic orators.
