THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: aspiring village, which should welcome any novel- ty, however ugly and dangerous, provided it will attract public attention and boom the sale of lota. Washington is 9 city, not a mere suburb, Its ‘Streets should not be obstructed by overhead elec- tric wires. ‘The Eckington and other roads, large- Jy suburban, which have been authorized to use electricity, will be the forerunaers of urban roads ‘With the cheap overhead wires, if they are per- mitted without protest to occupy with such wires ‘the fraction of their routes which les within ‘the city limits y It ts conceded that it is Practicanle to so construct such railways that in ‘streets the wires shall be underground and in Suburban roads strung overhead. To bury the ‘wires of the Eckington or the Tenleytown road for ‘the small portion of the route within the city Umits would not surely, as Major Raymond fears, Cost so much as to prevent the construction of the Failway. The Eckington officials state that their Toad will cost $20,000 per mile. A company which 48 public-spirited enough to pay that amount in equipping a road of which the cars are to be cheaply propelled by overnead electric wires can- not consistently begrudge the trifling additional expense for the public benefit of running thrcugh ‘@ conduit a few hundred feet of its wire at the city €nd of its line. If in any way these roads can be Anduced or compelled to pursue the course indi- ated no precedent for obstructing and endanger- ing the city streets will be established, and Wash- Angton will not be deprived of its hope of burying at some time the existing overhead electric wires ‘within the city mits. a It turns out that the case of cholera reported in ‘Philadelphia yesterday was not Asiatic cholera, as at first supposed, but acute cholera morbus, re- salting trom indiscreet eating. The news from Florida, however, grows more discouraging. This 4s lamentable, but not surprising. That yellow fever existed in that state all last winter was an ‘open secret; Dut instead of stamping it out then, as could have been done, the authorities seemed intent upon concealing the fact, lest a general knowledge of it should turn away the tide of win- ter travel and visitors, from which such a rich harvest is now reaped by the people of that state every year. The inevitable result has followed. For the sake of temporary gain, sickness, death, and endless sorrow have been entailed upon bun- reds ot people tn no wise interested in land or ‘other speculation, and the business interests of the state Bave suffered a biow from which they ‘Will not recover for many years. The currents of ‘Winter travel will now flow in other directions for @ long time to come, and outside capital will seek investments in quarters less Mable to fatal epl- demics, and where vigorous and effective measures are adopted to dimiuish their dangers and drive them out if they appear. The old lesson that “an eunce of prevention 1s better than @ pound of cure” has been a costly one to Florida; but she ‘Will probably remember it in future. And other communities will do well to proft by her experi- ence. $$$» —____ ‘The letter of Secretary Litchman of the Knights of Labor, announcing bis deveriination to vote the republican ticket this year and explaining nis, Teasons for #0 doing, 1s carefully worded, so as not to express an intention of appearing in the matter iu his official capacity. At the same time, it will be accepted by politicians and the public gener- ally, a8.a notice served upon the democrats that ‘they may count the Knights out of their calcula- tous for 188% ‘The opinions of Mr. Litchman as a man Would not be of suffictent consequence to cause the publication of one of his letters as a campaign document by either side; but the views of Mr. Litch- man as the secretary of a great labor organization are quite another thing. The letter will probably cause another rupture In the ranks of the Kaights of Labor. There are among them, doubtdess, a good many Who are staunch democrats, and who wili not tancy the idea of their secretary, or any other oMicer, getting up such a demonstration in which toey are involved, even by implication. Be- sides these there are others who, while perhaps agreeing in the main with Mr. Litchman’s conclu- sions, nevertheless disapprove of the introduction of politics into the order or of the order into polt- es. From their point of view Mr. Powderly has shown greater wisdom in refusing to make a prac- Ucal application as between the two parties of his frankly-expressed opinions upon economic ques- ons in any manner that couid be interpreted as a promise to carry a following witn bim, $< In England this time, not in America, the con- Uroversy over the birthplace of our late General of the Army has sprung up aguin. The new testi. mony adduced Is to the effect that General Sheri- an was born in the barony of Corkagutay while his father was steward to Captain Hickson, of Kedeilfl. The father ts described by local tradi- tion a8 a man of exceptional ability and upright ebaracter, who, afver leaving the employ of Cap- tain Hickson, set up a public house at Dingie and ‘Soon died. Hits widow {s said to have been mar- Tied a second time, but her sons by her frst husband got along so ill with their stepfather ‘that they migrated to America, This is an inter- esting Story; but, in view of the fact that the general's father, in the family’s western home, picked him out for a course of study at West Point, ‘and that ail the evidence brought forward by thase Who were interested, a few months ago, in proving ‘Sheridan to have been of allen birth, went Lo prove that he must have come to thts country while « babe, several serious Saws appear im the texture of the narrative. $< ‘The completion of the bridge over the Hudson River at Poughkeepsie 1s the culmination of some ‘twelve years of agitation and work. It will mark the beginning of a new era in railroading trom Northern Pennsylvauia and the West to the At- lantic seacoast. Trains which have hitherto been efected trom fifty to seventy-five miles to the ‘ROFth OF south Will be abie, when tne whole plas has been carried out, to pusn right through to ‘Boston, and thence make advantageous counec- Wous With the rest of New England and Canada. ——— - = —___ ‘Two more deaths have occurred through tue error of a drug clerk.
