S, King’s Defense—He Tells the Court Why he Whipped his Wife, Yesterday afternoon the charges against Dr. Geo. S. King, growing out of alleged assaults upon his wife, Nannie King; his Jaw, Miss Ruth V. Ford, and Policeman were tried 4m the Police Court and he pleaded not guilty. King remarked that he knew the old adage: “He Who ts his own lawyer has a fool for a client,” and he would be a fool and act as his own attorney. ‘Miss Ford testified that King told her in the hall that she had better wait and see him trash his wife, She said that he struck her. He locked the door, and not knowing how she could defend her- self she raised the window and cried “murder.” OD cross-examination Miss Ford said after he had struck her he went to his wife and struck her five irs. King, who appeared with a eye, tied that husbaud struck ber with the whip; that he ordered her to get up out of her bed, and she said she was sick. He then attacked her, striking her several times with a whip. Oa cross SXammation Dr. King endeavored to show, that was who'was the head Of the tamily, the court ruled against him. Officer Madigan vestitied that when he went to serve the Warrants King got a pistol from under the pillow, cocked it, aud aimed it at witness. Witness séized the Weapon with one band and held King down with the other. The prisoner said that It was for a principle of law he was fighting m2. ‘The officer,” sald Dr. King, “behaved with the gTeatest coolness, He was a credit to the force, for he acted bravely and did what not one man in twenty would have dared todo.” Dr, King then proposed to address the tak ing from his pocket some manuscript, but at the Suggestion of counsel walked to the witness stand and Was sworn. He began te read a paper giving an account of his domeszic troubles, Mr. Shepherd here objected to the reading of the wement, and asked about the charges under consideration, Dr. King admitted striking his wife, stating that used a whip because she retused to obey him, He struck Miss Ford also, he said, but did not point the pistol at the officer ahd did not intend to shoot him. Dr. King then rea/ling again from his p»per, said | he siapped nis wife's Tien 1sus, because she had | disobeyed him. Later, he said, his wife attempted vO split his head open with the edge of a plank, that she had left him but returned, resuming her 1 relations and consenting that on disobey- Vows, she should be whipped. After men- Uoning incidents that he thought showed his Wife's disobedience, King safd that on the 25th he deterialned to make a test-case, and called to the sister and son to witness her’ disobedience, and whipped her on her failing 19 obey him. He'ased the cat-o-tails which been in use on the younger chidren of his family for twenty-five Fears. When the officer came he resisted on prin- ciple and took elaborate pains not to hurt the in- hocent officer. In conclusion he asked the court ‘Uo instruct him as to What recourse he had to com- Pel his wife to obey her vows, ‘The court said he would not now deal with the assaults on the wife and her sister, but con- sider that on the officer. The defendant seemed to have been laboring under a misapprehension as to the rignts of a man in his castle. Dr. King called attention to the concluding clause of ifs paper, remarking “Iam fighting tne ‘woman’s rights convention.” The court declined to give any advice on this tna and continuing, remarked that as it had ‘ suggested that defendant's mental condi- ton Was not sound he would suspend judgment and hear testimony on that point. Mr. B. W. Lacey, a neighbor for eighteen months, testified that the defendant had been acting not altogether as a rauional man. ‘The court said he would continue the case for a week that the mental condition of the defendant could be inquired in eS Coming Amusements Aubavan’s Orgea HovsE.—Lovers of light Who are very numerous in Washington, have a pleasant prospect before them in the five weeks’ engagement of McChull’s company, which begins at Albaugh’s on Monday night. ‘This organization 43 one Of the most complete and well-m: fa the country, and its pertormances heretofore have always been marked by spirit, finish and careful attention to all those litue details which, while smali in themselves, contribute so much to the arUistic excellence of & representation, “Bellman,” ‘the new opera by Von Suppe, is said to be very amusing, and while its iis’ 13 not supposed to be of as high an order as that of others of the: ‘omposer's works, stlil it contains airs of a “catchy” and popular character that suit well the spit of the opera. Tt was found that on one side of the paper was written in Jead pencil the following: “Dear Lena: Ihave been thinking of this for quite a while, you know what trouble I have had, ‘so you will not blame me for this rash act. “Yours, in death, G. H, P. F. L” On the other side of the paper was written When this 18 found, remember P. F.L. and G. H. are under ground. G. H. and P. ¥.
