R. Lane to act as prin- cipal of the High School in place of the late Prin- ctpal Paul. After Principal Paul’s death Dr. Lane ‘Was 80 designated temporarily, and it was found That by reason of the restrictions of the law re- the Increase of teachers’ salaries, that Dr, would have to serve at his old'salary of $1,500, received as a member of the corps of te.ch- ers. Controller Duruam finally decided that the Doard couid increase the salary, and at a meeting held on the 19th inst. the board made an order ap- potating Dr. Lane as acting principal until the end of the year, and increasing bis salary to $2,500 from the ‘Ist inst. The District Commis siOners, however, discovered that there was no such office Known as acting principal, and hence | the salary could not be paid to Dr. Lane under that designation. So the board held another meeting last evening, and flxed the matter by cor- Tecting the minutes so as to appear that Dr. Lane ‘was appol just. until the end of the sehoolyear. This action, it Was stated, Would enable bim to draw the tn: creased salary.from the 19th tnst. What can be punished | In one section cannot be prosecuted in another, ‘nd persons unacquainted with the laws find it diMicult to understand the workings of the court. ‘The name of Mr. Thomas Miller ha: been men- Uoned asa candidate, and many members of the Dar think that, should Judge Snell fail to be reap- pointed and the District should receive the ap- ment, Mr. Miller's chances are as as of any other candidate. The name of As. sistant District Attorney Lipscomb has also been mentioned. He has so conducted the prosecution Of cases in the Criminal Court as to gaia the confi- | dence and esteem of his brother lawyers. Mr. J. W. Walker announces himself a candidate. He 13 @ ative of Virginia, but has resided here for the past seven years. ———— Christian Workers, ANNUAL MERTING OF ST. MARK'S FRIENDLY LEAGTE.
