E. K. Smith, of Chicago, the legal representa- tive of Mr. H. Lee Borden, in an interview pub- lished in the Chicago Tribune, with reference to the Witaerbee scandal, is represented as saying that he believes the whole trouble to arise from a desire to get money from Mr. Borden, and in proof of his assertion he submitted a number of letters exchanged between himself and Mr. Witherbee in regard to the case. ‘The first letter from Mr. Witherbee is simply a request for Mr. Borden's address. It 1s dated October 10, 1887, and says: “It ts important that 1 should be able to reach him within the next ten days. In fact, tt greatly concerns his future wel- fare and happiness, * * * If you could prevail Upon him to come here and seé me it Would be better for us both. Valentine Zeller, a resident of the county, was before the Police Court this morning charged with tailing to provide proper shelter for a horse.
