Brown was involved im @ scandal through charges preferred by Miss Savoy, Who wasateacherin the same building. ‘This was fo lowed recently by a personal encoun- ter im the Sumner building between Brown and Miss Savoy's Drother, aod om the following day the case came up im the Police Court. The report submitted by Dr. Witner last night said: “Following your Instructions, your committee have to report that fp thetr Ju igment this case is hot a proper one for further Investigation Dy this Board, fuF the reason that a portion of the charges referred to Were investigated by a committee of ‘this Doard, and thetr report was a “ce and the action of the board, with the report of ‘the com- juittee, Is duly recorded in our minutes. Another Teason why, in the Judgment of your committee, the portion of the charges which was investizated by a former commitvee 1s not a proper one for fur- ther tovestigation by this board Is, that your com. matte is of the opinion that it ts heither the duty OF the privilege of this board to resolve Itself tuto & tribunal to try cases which, in the District courts, receive due attention under the Edmunds law, ‘The portion of te barges accusing Mr Brown of carrying a loaded pistof into the Sumner school Duliding. ip the Judgment of your comult- tee, requires no further investigation by this beara. Mr. Brown's admission that be did carry @ loaded pistol into the Sumner school Datiding, as charged, 1s a fact, the culars of which your comin tee bave learned from the of- ficers of the District Poilce Court. Referring to the charge and Mr. Brown's admission that he Aid carry a loaded pt.tol into the Sumner schooi build- ing, your comunittee 1s of the opimion that Mr. Brown's act Was Unnecessary and bls conduct rep- Tebeasble, for as « teacher, If be belleved lls lire ‘Was In danger, he should have sought protection | in the law by swearing out a warrant, Raving the | parties making tbe threats arrested "and placed | Under bonds to keep the peace. Dr. Witmer sald the committee was asked simply to report whether there was ground for fart investigation by the board; they were not asked lo make any recommendation. Monday, It was heavily Jorded with passengers. The engineer of the Wrecked train told the story of the wreck as fol- lows: “We passed No. 49 (the freight), at Boone Grove ov tine and started toward Kouts. No. 49 pulled out Of the station in less than two minutes beluind us, when they should have waited inuch longer. When we were well away from the town We cguld see ber guts but a little way behind, e were not running ve ause ihe engine was on one sis." We had broken an eesentrie Sup, and were running Dut one pair of whee! having been forced to disconnect the other palt ‘h Were running loose. Of course the 1a us back a littie, but ‘we bad no idea That the engineer of No. 49 would have any dif™- eulty in keeping off from our heels, ‘The last time Tlooked beuind there Was ample room becween us. We stopped at the Boone Grove water tank, and Were Lucre almost a minute before they struck Us.” A SEMAPHORE THAT PROVED USELESS. It ts clatmed that when Engineer Connor, of the Passenger train, stopped at the water station he threw up the semaphore lamp nearly half a mile in bis rear. ‘This was to warn the freigbt that the express train had stopped for water, He had not been at the tank more than two minutes when he heurd the freight thundering behind. The grade ‘at Chis point ts very steep, and with sitppery Falls @beavy train runs at a furious rate, It was too late to warn the train, which was sireeping at & tremendous speed. Engineer Dorsey, of the freight, had falled to see te big red semaphore light, dnd his locomotive tore through the fog and tuist watil it crased Lato the rear Pullman coach, Betore the collision occurred Dorsey and his fire- lnan saw the | ou the doomed ex- maps burning Press train, but it was too late to avert the dis. aster. The two men leaped from their cab, aud then ‘the crash came. The engine of tue freight plunged so far into the rear Pullman that its upper Works dropped off in Ube center of tue coach, ‘The concussion drove tne second heavy sieeper into tue day coach, which Was reduced to splinters. ‘The platforms Of every car were torn away, and thus wrecked, The ends of eaci coach ‘were broken like eggsuells, ‘The cars of tue freigit traip were buried In every direction, The upper Works of the eugine were torn away, the teader thrown across tue track, and_ piled up’ for twenty Tods about Uke prairie were Hundreds of pounds of meat, AN IMPROVED HEATER AS BAD AS THE OLD CAR STOVE, ‘There were Saker timproved heaters on the ex- Press train, but, uotwithstanding this supposed Amprovement over the deadly stove, the coals in the heater quickly set fire to the upholstery of the Tear Pullman, ind in five minutes a flame, which at first was scarcely larger than a ribbou, spread 1nto & brisk blaze and soon cuveloped the shattered Coaches an i their screaming occupants, ‘THINKS FULLY THIRTY PERISHED. Dr. W. H. McKee, of Kouts, wio was one of the first at the scene of the wreck, said yesterday that to the best of his Knowledge it wo id not be overstating the facts to say that the collision had ost the lives of fully thirty people, It Was shortly after 1 o'clock this morniug When he Teached the wreck, and he tinmediately began to ¥e iis services 0 the Wounded. Those wuo were adly hurt when the crash came, he says, must have had little chance for their lives, so quickly had the cars taken fire and so thorough was the Work of tue flames. As an Lilustration of the de- Struction and the difticulty of arriving at a correct Jdea of its magnitude, the doctor suid Uhat proba- Diy not a soul would have been made aware of the all but total wiping out of the Miller family of six had not their boy been saved. NAMES OF THE KILLED. Dr. McKee stated that only nine bodies had been recovered, and they were so badly charred as to be almost beyond recognition, the most left of any of them being a blackened trunk, and in some cases little beyond a few handfuls of ashes, ‘The dee, father, mother, two brothers, and a irl (their fourteen-year-vld boy, Herman, will probably die also); Dr. Perry, of North Judson, tod.; Dr. Perry's wie, Dr. Perry's daughter, aged ‘eleven; a young irish lady. Superintendent Parsons, of the Chicago and Atlabtic, Was seen late in the afternoon, He Was very sure that no more bodies could be found under the wreck. Oniy nine persons had been killed, be declared, and not more tian eveven or twelve hurt, noue of the latter seriously. He ad- mitted thet po Hayman ad been seut back from the passenger tram When @ slop Was made, Mr Parsons said that the tralnmen depended upon a Semaphore ligut tuly 2,000 feet ‘in the rear of Where the Stup Was made. The conductor of tne train had pulled tue cord ‘for this light when he Stepped from is train. This would throw tue glare of ared danger signal on the track. The hight, however, Was foggy, and tue engineer of the fulst freight must have falled to see the siznal Superintendent Parsous thought the accident Would Gave been a very ordinary one had not the stove in the sueeper upset, That caused the de- struction of the sleeper, LwWo couches, and baxgaye Car, and in the main Was doubtiess the cause OF the loss of tire, GAS AIDED THE SPREAD OF THE FLAMES, Among the Wounded who were still at Kouts Yesterday afternoon Was Joe McCool, a bartender, Of Boston, Who may recover.
