DETROIT HAS WON the championship, as was anticipated early fn the season, alukouzh at one time it looked as if she might have to take a back seat. Detroit ought to have Won the championship with such a splendid uray of base Dall Ualent as composes her team. Philadelphia, however, is deserving of still greater credit. She bas pulled up to second place by virtue ot sieady hard work. Many people think that it 4s well for Detroits that the season ends now, for the Phuules are playing GREAT BALL. At a meeting of Citizens’ Association No. 5 last evening, a report from the committee on schools Was read by the chatrman, Mr. Z. Richards. It stated that,“‘in our last report we referred to the examination of quite a number of primary grade ‘schools in regard to the first lessons in learning to read and gave as a result that the well tried and successful method of teaching first reading ns heretofore adopted has been wholly laid aside, and anew method has been adopted, without the spectra direction and sanction of the board, and that without such sanction new reading books have been introduced. It 1s als’ reported that we found the most unsatisfactory specimens of read- ing in the very schools where these new methods are most thoroughly used. We therefore look with: Cd apprehension upon these new and radical changes as they tend to prolong the at- tendance at school, increase the expense of schooling and produce injurious effecs on the pupils.” The report condemns the movement pro- posed by the managers of the schools that. all‘the Pupils of the first five grades, including 20,000 ghildren, shall be given no tasks for study at ome. WALF-DAY SCHOOLS. “Your committee,” the report continues,” have noticed with grave apprehensions the pian of re- quiring the pupils of the over-crowded High School, of the most_mature age and of the highest qualifications, fo be put into half-day schools under the instruction of young graduates of the same school, Who have had very ttle if any more experience than the pupils themselves. Again, we have noticed a movement to break up the hali-day schools and require all the childreu of the lower grades to spend the whole day in school. ‘There are probably 16,000 children in haif-day schools. ‘This giving up hatf-day school would require new rooms for at least 8,000 pupils. This would re- quire at least 133 new school-rooms, or sixteen new eight-room bufldings, at a cost of $662,900.” In concluding Mr. Richards announced that. the cotnmittee proposed to pursue the subject. rurther And to report the results of their investigations from ume to time with the hope that at an early day Congress would give the District a school law which shall represent the views of the most intel- Ugent portion of the citizens “and relieve the Schools from inefficient and unwise control.” ‘The report was referred to the executive com- mittee, J. Ormond Wilson remarking that the com- mittee would teruituate Its series of reports with a resolution requiring the action of the association. ‘THE LIEN LAW.
