THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D.C., SATURDAY, THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTO SATURDAY ‘The Evening Star has a regular, permanent dona fide daily circulntion more than treble that of any other daily paper pablished in Washington, and mach greater tRaa that of all the other daily papers here added wether ‘The New York World presents some suggestive Statistics to show how uncertain a State New ‘York as been, politica since 1860. There are, however, a few interesting facts that the World might bare cited, In connection with its figures, calculated to throw light upon tem. In 1860 Edwin D. Morgan, a rich and well-known republican, rode into the governor's chair on the same wave of popular feeling which carried Mr. Lincoln into the Waite Hou@e. By 1862 the Presi- dent had, by his distribution of patronage, given Offense to some of the Workers of lls own party, and a large namber of others, who had voted for Lincoln and Morgan asa means of rebuking what they deemed the arrogant pretensions of the South, were in the fleld as soldiers, With this condition of things the election of the best- Deloved democrat in the State, Horatio Seymour, was comparatively an easy matter, although bis majority was about one-sixth that of his republican predacessor. For the next two tarms, the then leader of the republican party, Reuben F. Fenton, enjoyed the benefit of the re- ‘turned soldier vote, aud profited Dy the verbal mis take made by Horatio Seymour tm his good tem- pered speech to the mod at the City Hall in New York, during the draft riots. By 1868 the war fever had about died out, and the parties had fresh iseues to fight over. John T. Hoffman bad made a striking record as recorder and meyor of New York city, and Tammany Hall ‘took him up and made him governor. His alleged relations with the Erte ratiruad “ring” threw him off the political track at the end of his second term 1m 1872 and made possible the nomination of Francts Kernan, a good and able man, but not at all mag- netic. General Dix, with his “shoot-him-on-the- spot” celebrity, aided by the split in the demo- cratic party caused by the nomination of Greeley for President, found no great difficulty in defeat- ing Mr. Kernan by some 53,000 votes. The gen- eral two years later was In his turn defeated Dy an almost equal majority by Samuel J. Tilden, who bad followed up, as State senator, the advan+ tage gained by bim in popular favor by his suc- cessful fight against the Tweed gang. In 1876, Mr. Tilden, being candidate’ for the Presidency, stepped aside and left the way open for the election of his fast friend and fellow parti- san, Lucius Robinsoa, who had gained fame as “the incorruptible comptroller.” Mr. Robinson, however, incurred the hostility of Tammany Hall, and, as the next regular convention insisted on his renomination, Joun Kelly entered the field us an Independent democratic candidate, thereby throwing the election to their republican competi. tor, Alonzo B. Cornell, although the total anti- republican majority was n#ariy sixty thousand vous. This was in 1879, the constitution having Deen changed so as to make the govergor’s term three years Instead of two, In 1881 Joseph B. Carr,a very popular and in- ‘Muentia: veteran of the war, was elected secretary Of state by the republicans with a majority of Some thirteen thousand. The next year, President Arthur having taken a hand in the politics of the State and noiinated Secretary Poiger for gor ernor, came the “clean sweep” by which Mr. Cleveland was chosen by a majority of nearly two hundred thous: od, the largest ever given in the history of the Sate. In21883 religious and tem- perance dissensions within the patty caused the defeat of the healof the democratic ticket, the | present Assistant Secretary Maynardof thé Treas- ‘ury, anda nuixture of other results all the way down the line; in 1884, largely by the ald of the | #2 probibitiouists, the state went democratic at the | Presidential election by a majority so narrow as | to leave victory for some days in doubt; and in 1885 Governor Hill carried it. Last year there was no part¥ contest worthy the name. A consideration of this bit of history makes the pending struggie highly interesting. A new com- Petitor for favor ts in the fleld, in the shape of the United Labor party. Whom it will help and whom. 4t will hurt, and how much more strength it will Gevelop than what is necessary to insure it the balance of power in future years, all the country ‘will wateh eagerly to see. With its large vote in the electoral college, a contest In New York is of great importance to the whole Union, and there fs nothing in the history of parties in that State on ‘Which to found a prophecy for 1888 tnat will be ‘Worth the paper it is written on. The London Socialists have met and “reso. looted.” The upshot of their deliberations was a Protest against the sentences passed upon the ‘Chicago anarchist assassins. One speaker, serene. Jy conscious of the fact that he was four thousand miles away from the scene of danger and out of the jurisdiction of American justice, declared that every anarchist in Chicago ought to throw bombs at the police if the sentences Deexecuted, and that if himself brought before Judge Gury, he wonld | take pride in ridding the world of such a Villain, | ‘The Whole meeting recalled Esop’s story of | the garrulous traveler who djd wonderful things im his narratives, but “was unable to repeat them amid the familiar surround. ings of his own home. The most notable speech was made by Willlam Morris, the eccentric poet, who sald that “the Chicago cases showed him Bow s00n the thin veneer or civittzation over mere brutality was removed and the human beast exposed.” This 1s doubtless true. They have Made @ like {mpression upon every right-minded | ma; DUE there ts a difference of identity between | the buman Deasts referred to by Mr. Morris and those whose exposure sends a thrill of horror tnroagh the hearts of honest ettizens. ee Henry George has received the highest encour. agement in bis canvass for sccretary of state of New York: Dents Kearney has started for the east to take the stump agatast him.
