None fs, however, exempted when ‘the debt ts due for wages to servants, com- mon laborers, or clerks, except the wearing ap- parel, beds and bedding, and household furniture and provisions. | In addition, a later law exempts w all actual residents $100 salary or wages each month in all cases except the judgment be for wages, —-___ ‘The Sparrows and the Storm. PECKS OF DEAD BIKDS PICKED UP UNDER TREES IN PUBLIC GROUNDS. To the Editor of Tae Evesina Star: ‘The severe storm of Wednesday evening, 11th Inst, Was unusually destructive to English spar- rows. Many hundreds, perhaps thousands, must have perished in this city alone. A large propor- tion of the sparrows which are not nesting— laalnly young ones—pass the night together in large ‘companies, frequently congregating to the number of 500 or a thousand in some large tree, or group of trees, where they, resort regularly, Under such a group of trees, near the main en- trance of the Smithsonian ‘building, 254 dead sparrows were picked. up Eriday morning, and later in the day it was learned that 120 were counted beneath another group of trees near the eastern entrance of the National Museum, Ata large roosting-place in the Agricultural grounds the destruction seeras to have been even Greater, Dut most of the dead birds were carried away before belng counted. Several persons were seen collecting them in baskets or bags, an the last man carried off nearlyxa peck, (probably. 100 or 125 birds) there 1s little doubt that 300 or ae sparrows must have been killed at this roost alone. ‘Thus far no birds but English sparrows are known to have been killed by the storm, but this ig easily accounted for by the fact that the English Sparrows in this city probably outnumber all ouuer ‘ds at least 500 to one. It is also worth noting that the great majority of those killed were young of the year, although perhaps 2 or 3 per cent were old birds. ‘The catise of death 15 somewhat doubtful. Mr. Ridgway, Ornithologist of the National Museum, believing’ that the sparrows roost in such numbers that many of them are compelled vo put up with small twigs or Ups of branches, where they are whipped about by the wind, aud ‘nally beaten to the ground and actually drowned. It seems more ee the writer, however, that while some ay be killed in the manner described, the major- ity die from cold, for the feathers ouce wet, the birds are unable’ to keep warm, and the chili, to- gether with the exhaustion caused by the strug- gle with wind and rain, is too much for them, ‘The Department of Agriculture is pearing @ 5 ng! ctal investigation of the habits of the Sparrow, a3 well as of our native birds, and any one having Enowledge of sparrows or other birds killed by Thursday's storm will confer a favor by communicating the facts to Dr. C. Hart Merriam, ornithologist, Department ot Agriculture, Waursr B. Barnows, Acting Ornithologist. ae ‘The Coming Eclipse. ASTRONOMERS READY TO STUDY THE GRAND Mys- TERIES OF THE BUN. To the Editor of Tux EVENrxa Stan: The present week promises to be one of the most. interesting, in @ scientific point of view, that has occurred in the history of time, This 13 owing to the extended preparations which have been made to observe a total eclipse of the sun, which will be Seen in Europe on the 19th inst. ‘Or late years concerted operations have been made by astro- omic tnstitutjons, through thelr chosen agents, to make these Observations as positive and exact as knowledge of nature's laws and the perfection of instruments allow; and 80, when these oppor- tunities occur, we may expect many elucidations of exact science, as well as important discoveries, after these observations have been accomplished. ‘The United States will be well represented, and no doubt its chosen representatives will acquit them- selves in a highly creditable manner. ‘The sun’s surface will form one of ‘the most 1n- tersting features of observation as tt approaches contact with that of the moon; and in this way Some Of the conditions and perturbations con- Uguous to his mass may be more fully understood and explained. ‘The oft-maintained and disputed theory of an intra-mercurtal planet may possibly De solved by the watchful eyes of the professors of this eventful occasion, and thus the eccentricities of the planet. Mercury—those which show. some otner cause beside the sun—may be naturally ex. plain Many other mysteries connected with the sun Will be studied closely at this short but opportune period, but none, perhaps, with such great interest as that of the Corona—or the “Glory,” as some call 4t—whieh tor hundreds of thousands of miles out- ‘Wards surrounds the sun’s disc.
