THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: FUEsDAY.. ee 18, 1887. CROSBY Ss. NOYES... ‘The Evening Star has « regular, permanent bona fide daily circulation more than treble that of any other daily paper pubjished Washington, and much greater than that ef all the other daily papers here added together. Those who leave the city during the summer can Rave The Star mailed to them for any length of time, andl the address changed as often as desired- 8 Mail subscriptions must be invariably paid in aulvanee, at the rate of 50 cents per month, for the term desired. The sensational story of the resurrection of Brigham Young betng now Itself dead beyond resurrection, Mormondom has been waked up by fresher romance, in which a hitherto unrecog- nized son of Joseph Smith, the first prophet of the Chureh of Latter-Day Saints, figures as hero. This son 1s represented as the offspring of a union be- tween Smith and a young English woman, who made It a condition precedent to marriage that, if ‘she bore a son, he should inherit his father’s office. A son was borne—so goes the tale—taken to Eng- land to escape the perils of association with en- vious relatives, and educated at one of the great ‘universities; and he is now awaiting a signal to ‘appear in Salt Lake City and declare himself. The unfortunate feature of this story, however, as re- gards the credit it fs likely to receive, is that its author has been found, whorelates the circum- Stances of its original concoction out of purely imaginary material. In this particular the alleged Junior Smith suffers the same kind of suspicion as ‘he Mormon bible, the chief composer of which confessed his frand a few years ago with cheerful frankness. It would add materially to the success of the Mormon myths if they could be a trifle More antique. The fact that the most ancient of them fs covered with the monid of less than sixty Years 1s a serious drawback to thetr acceptance by ‘the historteal critics. a - Mr. Trotter of Massachusetts, who was ap- Potnted, 1t may be remembered, as recorder of deeds tn this District, puts himself fearlessly upon record in opposition to the views of the President's position entertained by Mr. Harris, of Virginia. Recorder Trotter says to a home pape, the Boston Transcript: “In my humble judgment Prestdent Cleveland stands firmly and solidly on the platform of civil service reform, He means to stand there, if I rightly estimate the quaitties of the man, to the end of his term. What Iam now saying’as re- gards the attitude of the President on this ques. ton would be said to-morrow if I were removed from the position which I at the present time oc- cupy at Washington.” Mr. Trotter's disinterestedness probably gives considerable weight to his utterances, but Mr. Harris, whoeulogized the President as ‘a pecu- Marly effective “bouncer” of republicans, also spoke with the air and words of one who knew, and the public mind fs still in doubt whether {t 13 Trotter, of Massachusetts, or Harris, of Virginia, who speaks by authority. A sonjot Henry George has been addressing the miners in the Wilkesbarre coal district, in support of his father’s land theories. ‘The interest of his hearers was manifested by the steady dwindling of the assemblage, which originally numbered twenty-five hundred, but lost «bout four-fifths of ts bulk in the course of an hour's speech. Five hundred men dropping out of an audience every Afteen minutes 1s no insignificant shrinkage. ‘That is at the rate of about 33 men in a minute, orone every twoseconds, Ifthisis afair indication ofthe way In which the new social gospel 1s going to appeal to the attention of the class of laborers for whose sake “Progress and Poverty” was ‘Written the outlook 1s certainly not encouraging forthe chief apostle, Perhaps, however, his son. 43 not an orator, and Mr. George may posstbly vin- icate his doctrine at the expense of his son. —___$<————— Senator Riddleberger has regained some control of bis temper, and returned to jall. Hs release was disgraceful to law and order. The power of courts to punish for contempt 1s sometimes used a8 an instrument of private oppression, but if the facts of this case are correctly reported there was absolutely no other course than the imposttion of fine and imprisonment left open to any court ‘with a particle of self-respect. A law-breaking law-maker deserves, if any distinction 1s to be made, more severe punishment than other men. ‘The Senator's rapt admirers should have con- tented themselves with contending that a distinct Baloglorified the place of his imprisonment, and that common people might now find distinction in Detng ““jugged” in the same cell; and should have Tefrained from making the Senator a jall-breaker and themselves a disorderly mob. ———— Secretary Lamar ts preparing to step out of the Cabinet, if he 1s to step out at all, amid applause from men of all parties for the course he has taken tm the case of the Atlantic and Pacific raflway indemnity lands. The decision rendered yester- day, let us hope, will be the precursor of a long Une of similar announcements that the govern. ment has not set apart lands for railway com- panies as « free gift, but as the consideration of a contract entered into between the corporations and the people in each instance; and that the failure of a corporation tocarry out its share of Such contract absolves the people from confirming 1 im the possession of {ts lands. This is a very ‘simple principle when applied to the law that 1s daily administered between man and man, and its \ logic is irrefutable. a ‘There 18 abundant evidence of sincerity im the Pledges of a prince-eiect of Bulgaria when he de- clares that he s ready to lay down his life for his People. It would rather complicate matters, how- ever, if he should carry this idea Into execution When Russian intrigue has addressed itself to the a Ss THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. D.
