U., in charge of work among soldiers and sailors, writes to TuE Srax In relation to the Temperance Home for Sol- diers and Sailors, 329 Missouri avenue: “The name ‘Rehoboth’ has not been retained Decause 1t necessitated so much explanation. ‘This ‘Home’ established under the auspices of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, in the de- partment of work among soldiers and’ satlors, 1 the outcome of a deeply-felt necessity for a place Where such men might find, a reading room and, when desired, lodging, lunch, baths, &c., free from the temptation of the saloon. While we hope that in the future the institution may become self-supporting, yet for the present, we are largely dependent upon the bounty of our’ fellow-citizens and we have no fears of being disappointed. Ai- though so lately has the idea nm conceived and bas iu execution tha* few know of it, yet we have een the recipients of a number of gifts. From Gen. Gibson, Of the arsenal, has come one thousand neatly printed cards; from soldiers at Soldiers’ Home and arsenal some excellent daily and weekly papers; a contribution box, the work of one of the arsenal soldiers; curtain Seri from Trunnel & Clarke; Bibles from the Bible Society; Gospel Hymns from Mr. C. C, Pursell. Mr. Moses kindly furnished a number of chairs for use at our cedica- Uon services, while others were loaned by the Central Union Mission. We will be grateful if you will, trough your Vatuable colums, allow us to ex- press our thanks for these favors, and also for the Water-cooler loaned by Mr. Watts. Our ‘Home’ being now in {ts infancy and not at all upon It feet, we most earnestly solicit donations of money: or of any household articies. The cause is one to appeal to all classes of citizens, for our Army and Navy, while they stand ready to defend our per- sons and property, should find us willing to give them, as farasmay be, the home comforts and Influences which they have sacrificed. This is the aim of this establishment, for we feel that it 1s to the lack of tuts that may be largely attributed the drinking habits which tarnish the reputations of such numbers of our men, The Home will not close its doors to the citizen, but will gladly welcome them to all it may have to offer.
