The Bap- Ust church at Carlisle was blown down, and sev- eral other buildings were completely destroyed. Lynched in Short Order. AN INDIANA CROWD HANGS A MAN WHO CAUSELESSLY SHOT A PHYSICIAN. North, physician in charge of the Wabash, St. Louis and Pacific Raflway Hospital at Peru, Ind., was shot, probably fatally, Wednesday by John Christianson. Christlanson’s stepdaughter had married against his wishes, and he was much enraged. After beating her he ran into a shed and fired two shots. Dr. North and others supposed he had committed suicide, and opened the door of the shed, when Christianson fired, inflicting a wound wich fs thought to be fatal. “Christianson Was put in jail. Excitement during the afternoon and evening was intense. Men drew together in groups, and the shooting and the punishment of Christlanson formed the sole topic of discusston, At 12:15 o'clock Thursday morning twenty-two masked men appeared at the Jail and demanded the keys. This demand was refused, and the mob broke down the large fron door, and in fifteen minutes had Christianson in thelr’ possession. He Was taken on a dead run down Broadway to the bridge crossing the Wabash river, where he was twice strung up, and the second time his life was extinguished. ‘The lynching was witnessed by about 1,000 people. It was an informal affair, to which about three hundred citizens gathered to be presented to the distinguished ex-Senator. To the surprise of those in attendance Mr. Conkling made a speech. He said: “I am glad of this invitation. It touches me greatly, because I belleve the frst reason Why you keep a place for me ou the roll of kindly remembrance 1s because I did not wait tor death to glorify our dead hero before I praised him, but spoke my love and honor before he had gone from ws. His good qualities are a theme of which my heart is full, of which I have never hesitated to speak, and’on which I might speak now without limit.
