Harper and Hop- kins, of the Fidelity Bank, spent the night in jail Harper 1s reported to have slept soundly, while Hopkins spent most of the time walking the floor. ‘They were visited by friends this ae and were again making an effort toprocure bail.’ It is Said that, Harper yesterday telegraphed to Mr Whitely, of Springfield, Obto, asking n im to come down and go w ‘but at this time that great manufacturer was taking steps for the ap- ointment of a receiver. THE SHARP TRIAL, Lawyer Scribner Will Have to Pro- duce an Itemized Account of Money Sharp Paid Him. New Yorke, June 24.—Jacob Sharp’s trial was continued this morning. Secretary McLean, of the 23d-street road, was recalled to show that Jacob Sharp owned 400 shares of the stock of that Seah aac ei ae hd Sohn HPents and sonn H ‘selmes were recalled ior the Same pt Lawyer John M. Scriber was recalled to the wit- ness chair forthe sixth time, He said that in June, 1885, his ner received a check for $76,389.68 from Mr. Sharp for legal services. He objected to producing the 1t Dill for services rendered, but Judge Barrett decided that it was Rot a priviliged communication. The question of the production of the bill was left in abeyance, while {he examination of the _ witness on other points was continued. On June 21, hesaid the contract with the ‘companies ‘Was concitded, and they were paid $450,000 in the Bresence of Mr. Sharp. Asked if there was any bution of money in his office on June 19, 1835; by Mr. Sharp or any one else, the witness re piled that be never saw a dollar uted there on that or any other day. ‘Mr. Scribner before leaving the stand announced that he had received @ copy of his Dill rendered the Broadway road. Mr. Nicoll’s desire to see the bill, however, seemed to have vanished, Detective Sergeant Frinck was called to prove that Maloney, Delacey, Keenan and Dempsey had fled from the ‘Jurisdiction of the court, ME. Parsons objected, and argued that Mr. Sharp Was not accountable for their absence. The objection was overruled, and Detective Frinck said that after going to the houses of the men named and falling to find them there he went to Montreal on June 16 and served Dempsey with a subpoena to ap) as @ Witness in the Sharp trial. He went to Lachine and served Moloney with a similar sub- pena, Detective Sergeant Mangin testified that he was in Montreal the day before yesterday, and served Keenan witn asubcena, ‘Edward P. phelps testified that he met Sharp in ‘nd on the promise of being made Broadway Surface Road, helped ‘Sharp to pass the raliroad act.
