» 4 THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D.C... FRIDAY, JUNE 24, 1887—WITH SUPPLEMENT WASHINGTON: _ rriar.. --June 24, 1897. 3) Evening star has a regular. permanent tena Gdedally cireulation mere than trebie tint of any other daily paper published ta Washington, and much greater than that ether daily papers here added aE STAR cannot undervake & preserve or retwrn rejceted communications. Contributors nhc wish {0 possess ther manuscrypte, «wn used, should keep a copy. t®” Matter of whatever character tntended for publicution must, ¥ its appearance the same day © desired, reuch the office not later than 12 © clock noon. 2” No attention paid to Anonymous Letters or Communieations om any subject, Those whe leave the city during the summer oan have The Star mailed to them for any length of time, and the address changed as often as desired. The subsertption must be invariably paid in ad- vance. Advertisers ‘ill serve their own purpose best, and at the same time greatly accommodate Tat Stan, if they will send in Lefore noon to-morrow their announcements for the extra large edition of Saturday's paper, the forms of which wwust be sent to preas much earlier than on the other five days of the week. —————+e+____ Mike McDonald, who has just written to the democratic county central committee of Cook County, IIL, that “pressure of private business precludes his giving any further attention to polities," Is one of the most notorious sporting men in the city of Chicago. The “private bust- ness" which presses him so severely is the pro- prietorship of a well-known saloon and gambling establishment, With a professional ball-goer's of- nee attached. For many years he has been re- cognized as the political “boss” of the city, and has made no secret of bis Influence over courts and Juries, as well as at the polls How much of @ Success he has made of this combination of call- ings may be Judged from the fact that he began his career asa peanut boy on one of the local railways ruaning into Chicago, and now, at forty- live years of age, ls estimated to be worth some- thing like a million dollars, a large share of his wealth being Invested tn valuable unencumbered real estate in the heart of the city. Whenever a uabitual “tougin” gets Into trouble in Chicago, his Irtends go straight to McDonald with an appeal to get hin out, ‘The gambier furnishes 8 bona on a moment's notice, for any amount required, his Mabdlities on this score often amounting to an ag- gregate of several hundred thousand dol- lars at a time If ft 18 not com venient for the bailed man to appear in court on the day set for his arralgument, McDonald 45 usually able to furnish another person to answer temporarily to his name and put in the desired plea. For such services as these, it is understood Uaat he makes no charge in money, but trusts to the gratitude of the man he has befriended to secure all the votes the latter can command when another close election is to come off. 1: tae scoun- dret betrays his patron’s confidence, woe to him. One man, who was under Ove hundred doilars’ bail, ran away, and McDonald not only paid Pin- kerton’s detectives fifteen hundred dollars to eateh him and bring him back, but followed up the prosecution higvell till be Bad sent the fellow to prison for the longest term the law allowed, ‘Three years azo a deputation waited upon Me- Donald and offered him the democratic nomination for Consress in is district, whieh practically meant an election. He was not to be caught with such bait, however. “What!" he exclaimed, “go to Washington with a lot of hoodoos for five thousand a year? Why, my Christian friends, that bar there pays me five thousand a month and better.” Wat Mc Donald’s retirement means it is hard to say. It was undoubtedly brought about by the discovery that he has lost his grip in part upon the city he ruled so long. He could not iord it over The present mayor as he did over the late one, and ail bis intflucnce could not prevent his own broth. ers conVictlon last week as oue of the Chicago “doodle” gang. His lines at last have fallen in ‘unpleasant places, The Baltimore industrial etucation association held Its first meeting last night in that city. Its alm is to bring tozetuer extsting organizations en- gaged in any form of industrial training, and to promote public interest im the subject, and public deltet ta bation of explanatory papers, by ascertaining the best method of engraftiag industrial education upon the present school system, by establishing a center of information, Dy the publication of man- uals on various branches of industrial education, and by the training of teachers to curry tne sys tem into effect. Interesting reports of industrial work in connection with the Johns Hopkins Uni- Versity, the public schools, the Maryland Institute schools, the Manual Labor school, the Decorative Art society, and other iustitutions were read. Bait iuore claims to have the first manvai training sehool this country, onvanizat as a part of the public school sy¥stei i supported entirely by pubite taxation. This school was opened in March, 1894, and ts reported Uo be very successiul. Tne object 1s instruction and practice ip the use of tools and such Instruction as may be deemed necessary in mathematics, drawing and the English branches of a high-school course. The wol instruction ineludes carpentry, wood-turning, pattern-making, clipping and filing, forge work, moulding, solder- ing and brazing, the use of machine-shop tools, and other instruction of a similar character. The course of instruction is three years, end students who satisfactorily perform the work of the full course are entitled to graduate and receive a certificate from the faculty and committee of the school AS a practical answer to the question of what can be done by the students of such a school, it ts stated that the graduating class has just completed a horizontal engine of Mfteen-norse power, in full running order. The Idea of associating, for the purpose af co- operation, the different organizations and indi- viduals who are engaged in or who favor and will promote industrial training, is a good one, and can doubtless be followed to advantage elsewhere. ‘The question 13 a practical one, of great present interest, and growtug lance. S$ ‘The platform adopted by the convention of the ‘Sons Of America at Chicago yesterday contains sume sound principles. It relieves the order of the suspicion of Knownotningism by raising no clamor <gainst the lumigration of worthy people who want Ww enjoy the Deuefits of our free institutions vad are willing to bear their share of the common Meng in return. But it condemns, on the one the wealthy European speculator who comes «ver here and buys up large tracts of our public snd fora song, and on the other the worthless class Who abuse the liberty given them by. striving vooverthrow the very government that assures Tem Of i. These are, im truta, the worst ene. kates the American people hare to guard them. + svives agvinst. It would be a strained construc. ! ton of the Constitution to interpret the autaority wen to the United States to protect euch of the states “against inv-sion” as applyiag to the tava “10n of land-grabbing syndicates and foreign-born, snarchiste; Dut it Would be a happy thing tor the «watery if such an appileation could be made. $< ‘The removal of Craig Tolilver seems to have had a pacttying effect upon his followers, at least tem. porarfly. It 1s usually the case that such des- porate gangs contain one controling spirit, whose actual presence {3 essential to their Whea he goes, unless he teares some well recog- nized Ueutenant, efther all the band become lead- era, or all so shrink from leadership that indect. sion Dreake their strength. A very firm policy on tue part of the State and county authorities, car. ried Into effect Just at this time, may prevent the uprising Of another ‘Yolliver to replace the one of whom society ts so happtis rid. —+ A witness was called by the prosecution in the ‘Sharp case esterday whoye testimony, though oaly in writing, was undouMealy much dreaded by the deteadenc and b's counsel. This was no leas a person than Mr. Jacob Sharp himself, whose depesttion before Luz State senate investigating committee ta Februc:y of last year was admitted Aud read to the jury. When Mr. Sharp gave this testimony to the committee, OF rather had it dragged out of him by Senator Conkling’s close questioning, be little suspected that he was tus foundation for an attack upon Diaseit sixteen jooaths later. That is ome of the risks 3 man lakes when he goes into the booule business and Bets caught at it THE EVENING STAR. |W: Wom Af there ever was such rush for Boy’ andChil- dren's Clothing in response to » single adver- ‘tisement as we have hed since last Tuesday af- ternoon, when the “Star” announced our great ‘mid-eesson mark-down in prices. Wisescres have told us “it was the wrong time,” “we were foolish to cut our prices (already so low) in the height of the season.” Well, we have = faint idea that we know what we are about, and thst nowis the time, when the people want the woods, to make exceptional concessions; not ‘when they areall supplied and the season is over. ‘This unusual and exceptional cut in prices of Boys’ and Children'sClothing will hold good until next Wednesday, the 29th inet, af- ‘tar which time the goods thst are left go back to ‘their regular prices, We give those who have not availed themselves of the advantages, We offer fair warning: Next Wednesday brings this reat reduction sale to. close.
