THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C.. THURSDAY,? JUNE ‘A 2, 1887—WITH SUPPLEMENT. THE EVENING STAR. WASHIN THURSDAY... CROSBY 5. NOYES.. Pr Washington, and much greater than that «1 all the other daily papers here added together. The distant mutterings of a storm are heard in St. Louls, and a cloud no larger thana number ten glove 1s outlined against the pure blue of the empyrean. A question has arisen whether the President fs to visit that city asthe guest of the citizens or of the Grand Army of the Republic. A few days ago both parties were contending for the honor of entertaining him. Now, each is appar- ently trying to put him off upon the other. It is to be hoped, for the sake of St. Louis, that this controversy will not be allowed to proceed very far, of the President will settle 4t in short order by refusing to become anybody's guest. He has Yery prompt and unceremonious manner of deal ing with a case like this. If, as Grand Commander Fairchild holds, the @. A. R. did wrong In inviting Mr. Cleveland to {ts encampment, it seems as if, ‘with the amount of newspaper notortety that has Ween given to the proceedings, there was ume enough to put a stop to them before they reached the present embarrassing juncture. ‘There will probably be enough public spirit in St. Louis to Azra: Bear & Ca, DEALERS IN SHOES. maa] a A FRIDAY, JUNE 3D. It will also decide whether or not to elect a Senator for ‘the term from 1889 until 1895, ‘The next legisla- ‘ture does not meet until three months after the end of the present unexpired senatorial term, and ‘the state has the chotce between selecting a Sena- tor by means of a legislature chosen more than ‘two years before he will serve, and going without full representation for three months, or with the representation for that period of an appointed Senator. The precedents are said to be against a senatorial election so far in advance as that sug- gested, and it is probable that this legislature will content itself with filling the unexpired term, ‘The leading candidate for the position is Mr. W. E Chandler, who ts thought to have finally got the Detter of the opponents who have hitherto baffled his senatorial aspirations. Mr. Chandler 13 an able and untiring political worker, and a keen, shrewd, and brilliant man. If elected hé would ‘add to the brains of the Senate. $$$ Parnell thinks that his physical condition 1s due to poisoning. Following the precedent established inthe matter of the alleged Parnell letter, it 1s now incumbent upon the editor of she London ‘Times to prove that he did not potson Parnell. The ‘Unionists have so much to gain from the death of Parnell and Gladstone, for which they are said to De waiting, the O'Brien eplsode shows that at- tempted murder for political reasons 1s viewed as sometimes justifiable; in short, the circumstances ‘are so suspicious and so strongly corroborative ‘that “no mere denial” by the Times can be given any weight. Nothing short of proving that Par- nell 1s not potsoued, or of showing conclusively ‘that some one else poisoned him, can clear the Times, according to the method of procedure which the Tines has sustained, If Parnell has erally been poisoned, the Incident in connection ‘with the attempted murder of O'Brien furnishes a curious commentary upon the Times’ famous arti- cles and places Parnellism and crime in oppost- tion instead of In conjunction. It ts not generally Delieved, however, that efther the Times or Par- nell Is in league with assassins, or that the Times has mixed poison for Parnell, or that Parnell 1s preparing a dynamite jubilee for the Times, —— Comptroller Butler 1s laying his new broom about him with a vengeance. He has cut off the supplies of wines and liquors hitherto furnished at the public expense to the board of visitors at ‘Military and Naval Academies. Hereafter, when ‘a visitor fortifies himself internally, he must pay for his stimulant out of his own pocket, or sponge on the superintendent's private siicboard. What €ffect this will have on the assessed value of the ‘visitor's office rematns to be seen. Combined with another restriction just imposed, the disallowance of expenses incurred by a visitor In taking his family along with bfm, it will change the whole ‘Dusiness from a junket toan honor. It may result un making future boards more select than some have been in past years; limiting the membership ‘to men who do not feel the need of alcoholic ex- Bilaration in midsummer, and who are both will- Ang and able to pay for any luxuries not directly sizes, ee ON 3 Sed 456 BH OA 8 3 *- 2-9) et ee 344 465 BH OB i463 Bei 302 bebo Te a oer 243 344 4% 5 Reduoed from $2.76 to 82.18 per pair. ‘This is a Staple Shoe, and so is the next one. Anetdental to their official functions—like the Pres- Adent’s excellent choice this year, Mr. George W ‘Chuds, of Philadelphia, ‘The opening of libraries, museums and art gal Jertes op Sunday is asked especially by those whose ‘week-days are fully occupied in physical labor. ‘The partsof that day not devoted to religious ‘exercises, can hardly be spent ina more improv- dng and elevating manner than in taking advan- tage of such institutions. The man who works hard physically, through the week, finds in the elevation to a higher plane of thought and in new activity of mind as refreshing rest as from cessa- Yon of bodily labor. The mind worker finds rest in change of thought, and in activity of body in ‘theopen air. Sunday dors not mean torpor. Religious services give spiritual activity; our parks and beautiful suburbs invite the weary iuind worker to refreshing walks; and our libraries, museums and art-galleries should give the tired Wody-worker the change and rest of mental aetivity and development. Church goers do not necessarily relapse into Sunday sluggards after hours of service, and non-churchgoers should not be confined to the saloons of city or country as Places of Sunday resort, or be permitted omly the | frivolous and often debasing forms of Sunday re- creation, ——— = —___ Everybody will be glad that the Toledo Cadets, | ‘Uhough not awarded a prize by the Judges at the | National Drili in unis city, are to receive a royal Danquet anda thousand-dollar testimonial from ‘Weir admirers at home. In both the tariff issue is ably and tn- geuiously pressed. But at Nashville the Southern or confederate idea was treated as republican, Xept from expression in republican votes only by War and color prejudice, of which the speaker sought the removal; while at Springfield the Southern or confederate idea was pictured as dis- Unetively democratic, and as irreclaimably bad.
