Greely said to-day that it s hardly possible that the quarters of the Sigmal Office can be changed before Congress meets, The matter is in the hands of the Secretary of War, but will probably not be acted upon. Gen. Greely said he was in favor of moving to any building that could be used, if it would enable them to get out of the present unsuitable and unhealthy quarters. It ‘was at first thought advisable to rent the Butler mansion, on Capitol Hill, but the three or four thousand dollars necessary to move would have to come out of the contingent fund, which 1s prac- Ucally exhausted. Besides, General Greely said, it is doubtful if fen Boe) would favorsuch a mor as it has under consideration the purchase of that building. In view of the requirement that nearly all the bureaus of the W: partment shall be quartered in the new wing of the War Department building it 1s doubtful if a location on Capitol Hill would prove satisfactory on account of distance. Under the circumstances, Gen. Greely thought that Congress will have t act. before anything can be done. The Ferguson place on M Street, Which was so nearly purchased by Congress last year, he thought the most destrabie for the Signal Service. It contains 54,000 square feet of ground and ean be purchased for $108,000, making only $2 a foot including the building, which is splendid~ ly adapted for the Signal Serv ge atin Presidential Postmasters Appointed. ‘The President bas appointed the following post masters: Ambrose Beatty, New Britain, Conn.; B.F.
