eta 7 i , Fe ll ad THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D.C., FRIDAY, MAY 6, 1887-SUPPLEMENT. THE AFGHAN UPRISING. Progress of the Ghilzni Revolt—The Capture of the Khyber Pass—Descrip- tion of the Captured Strategical Point. ‘ A cablegram published in Wednesday's Sran stated that the Afghan msurgents now aoid Khyber Pass and the surrounding bills. Previous Teports stated that the ameer’s troops ‘had been routed near Jellalabad and Marnt; that Khelat-t- Ghilzat had been captured, and that Ghuznee was surrounded by the rebelitous Ghilzais, while Can- dabar was threatened by them. Ghuznee aad Khelat-t-Ghttvai are important fortresses on the highways between Cabul and Candahar, and the Khyber Pass fs the famous mountain gate on the direct road between the Punjaub and Cabul. Khelati-Ghilzal, one of the places which has falien Into the insurgents"hands, is elghty-seyen Talles northeast of Candanar. Although ft 1s an Ssolated post, and the defenses are of a mearer character, in the war of 1841% Capt, Gragie held e for months with but 40 men, qt wae only 40 were Europeans. KNeigti-Giilaal 13 at the southern extremity of the eountry Inhabited Dy the Ghitzal tribe, which 1s now ia insurrection. ‘The fortress stands ‘on a barren eminence to tbe Tight of the Tarnak, and is described “one of "i zee, Which 1s surrounded by the insurgents, 3s one of the most important fortresses in Afghan istan, and has hed a history of remarkable vicissi- tudes, It Hes 23.0 miles northeast of Candahar, southwest of Cabul. It stands Ghuznee Kiver, on a some ¥ plain, close to a Spur run. west from the Gulkoh range. ‘AM forms an irregular square about a inile in cireult, and is girt by a high wail rising from ghe top of a mound and built of stone and brick fhasonry laid in mud and clay. It Is lanked at irreguiar intervals by towers and surrounded by ditch. The el formerly stood at the north angle of the town on an abrupt di ed knoll, and belug 150 feet nigh above 1 ain and fortified, It commanded the city co ely. In 1842, however, it was destroyed by order of Gen. Nott; and it Would appear from the recent tele- ms that no restoration of the fortifications has veh attempted. The position of the town 1s one Of great stratezical importance as part of a line ot detenge irom Cabul to Candahar against an invader from the west, or as a point whence to control the Ghilzais, Hazaras, and other inhabl- tamts of this elevated portion of Afghanistan. The city itself 1s composed of dark and dirty irregular streets of mud-built houses, and will not bear comparison with Cabul or couspicuousiy in the ig 4841-42 and 1579-80. It was captured by Gen. Stewart in April of the last-named year, after a Dattle in Which the Afghans lost over 1,000 men, While the British lost only 17 in killed’ and had Tsexesvous Buzoars, GRAND OPENING or FINE FOOTWEAR.
