The Assort ENGAGEMENT.—Miss Emma Abbott A CITIZENS MEETING. Delegates to the Central Committee | A Gathering atthe: cl oxen by Association, No. 6. MATTERS DISCUSSED AT A MEETING LAST NIGHT—HOW THE DELEGATES WERE CHOSEN—THE MEMBERSHIP OF THE ASSOCIATION. A meeting of Citizens’ Association, No. 6, was held last evening at the hall, corner of 19th street and Pennsylvania avenue, Dr. Reyburn in the chair, and B.S. Pike secretary. Before the meet- ing Was called to order the secretary was kept busy receiving the names of new members and their dues. ‘The secretary announced that there Were 84 pames now on the rolls. The roll was called and a large number responded to their names, one of the members remarking that this was the best attendel meeting of the association that had yet been held. After the reading of the minutes of the last meeting, the president announced that the business before the meeting was the election of fifteen delegates to represent the assoclation in the central com- mittee. Mr. Witmer suggested that a committee five ‘be appointed by the chair to nominate twenty-ilve persons from whom the members t fifteen to vote for. He said that many qusinted suflicientdy with the mem- bers of the association, and the report of the com- mittee might serve as a guide and a suggestion to them in preparing their ballots. DID NOT LIKE THAT WAY. ‘This proposition was opposed by several mem- bers, because they stated that the association Was composed of individuals, and in the organization so farithad been the intention to preserve the rights and powers of the individual, and by the appointment of a comimitvee the judgment of five men would be imposed upon the association. It Was said that the best plan Was for each member to place on his ballot the fifteen members that he Wanted to represent the association, and those recelving the highest number of votes would be elected. Upon the motion of Mr. Mullett a resolution to this effect was adopted, and the members were requested to prepare their ballots, MR. HAY HAS A LIST. At this juncture Mr. E. B. Hay said that it was 20 doubt the general desire to select the names of representative men, and he had given the matter some attention and had prepared a list, Which he would read for the guidance of the mem TS Mr. Mullett objected to the reading of the list as it would be in effect doing what the ‘association had resolved not to do. | Mr. Hay protested against this interpretation, and amid the general laughter he still remained ‘standing with the list tempt- ingly exposed to the gaze. Mr. Conger called out, “Let him read it. It won't do any harm.” Some one laughingly suggested that the nom!- nations of the committee of one be read. Mr. Hay objected to Unis term, and said that it was only intended for general information. ‘There being no further objection the list was read, and then another member who had a list read his, and then the balloting began. ‘THE DELEGATES ELECTED, When the ballots were counted it was an- nounced that thirty-eight ballots had been cast and forty-five individuals had been voted for. ‘The following fifteen having received the num- ber of votes given below, which were the highest, re declared elected: br, Robert, Reyburn, 35: . He wanted toobtain the men who were willing to work. ‘These committees are as follows: Streets and avenues, nine members; water and sewers; five members; lights, five members; railroads; ove members; schools, seven members; rules and printing, three members; an executive committee ‘composed of the officers Of the association, chair- men of the committees already enumerated and five additional members of the association noton any of the sald committees, ‘The president was instructed to communicate with the delegates electe® and ascertain if they were willing to serve. ‘The election of alternates ‘Was postponed until the next meeting.
