THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON bona Side daily circulation more than trebie that of any other dally paper published in Waskingtes, and much greater than that ef all the other daily papers here added = THE STAR cannot undertake to preserve or return rejected communications. Contributors whowwish to possess their manuscripts, / wn- used, should Keep a copy. " Matter of whatever character intended for Ppudlication must, if its appearance the same day ts desired, reach the office not later than 12 o'clock noon, EW" No attention paid to Anonymous Letters or Washington 1s outgrowing its present bounda- ries. Extensive suburban building and platting, efforts to make such platting conform to the sys- temof the city streets, extension of street car lines and further proposed extensions, and pro- posed suburban branches of cable roads, all point ‘Ya time when the city of Washington shall be Umited only by the boundaries of the District of Columbia. Everything which can be done to Dind the outlying district to the eity will tend in the desired direction. In addition to furnishing increased facilities of communication in new ‘street car lines, cable roads and steam railroads, ‘the Improvement of the county roads over which the main travel in carriages and wagons will pass should not be overlooked. Not only will the peo- ple of the District in the county be benefited by easier and closer communication with Washing- ton, of which they are eventually to become citl- zens, but the city itself will feel the advantage of an enlargement of its residence area, and of easier communication with those who at present largely supply its market. Good Toads im the county will join good roads in Mary- land, for there seems to be a general awakening In the adjacent counties of that state to the advantages of an ever-growing capital city as @ home market, and tothe important part which good roads play in swelling the profits of such trade. Long before the whole District is a city both Maryland and Virginia will doubtless be pre- pared by easy communicating roads to take ad- ‘vantage of the mutually profitable trade which the vicinity of the capital affords. With the vigorous development of the city, Its increase of population, and the planting of solid foundations for a long suppressed loeal pride, comes a grow- ing, healthy local sentiment in the citizens of ‘Washington, of which a present expression 1s found in the associations which are forming tn tne different sections of the city. Citizenship of the ‘great Washington of the future, with its numerous and varied light manufactures giving it the wealth of Paris without the smoke of Pitts. burg, its vast population, its pubife buildings and institutions, itsuniversities, its art schools and art galleries, its scientific collections, its great iraries, and its general attractions as a place of residence indicated as well by iiles of contract built houses as by the palaces of millionaires, will be a cause of congratulation and not of reproach. a ‘The tmportance of the Fesult of yesterday's elec- tion in Chicago can scarcely be overestimated. So confident were the outlaws of the whole country, afew months ago, that the social revolution started Im Chicago last year was bound to succeed there and spread through all the large cities on the con- tinent, that time-serving politicians had begun to Did against each other for their votes. A notort- ously conspicuous figure in this competition was ‘Mayor Harrison himself, who went as far ashe dared and could to curry favor with the socialist gang. His latestfantics, including the letter of withdrawal in which he charged the National Ad- ministration with exerting itself for his defeat, were actuated by the hope of rousing in his favor that sympathy which all the devotees of an un- popular cause are supposed to feel for their fellow- ‘Victims of oppression. The Inglorious collapse of the Carter boom before the election, and the handsome victory of Mr. Roche announced this morning, must not be faterpreted, therefore, in a narrow partisan spirit. The same thing would have happened if Carter had been a republican and Roche a democrat. What the people of Chi- ‘cago were bound to do was toelect the man who inost strikingly exemplified the popular faith in Jaw and order, and to erush any man who would be base enongh to accept a trust for the defense of society and then conspire to betray It. The work- Angmen of Chicago—not the tramps and vagabonds ‘Who masquerade as laborers, but the honest men ‘who earn thetr living by dafly toll—came magnit- cently to the front tn the emergency. The real cause of labor reform recetved an impetus from the saime source from which the sham pretense got its Knockdown biow. If the labor candidate had con- Gucted himself like a decent citizen, he would have stood a fair chance of election. But he went about With a hoodlum following, preaching soctal- isu in 1t$ raukest form, and disgusted every good man, rich or poor, whoeame Within reach of his Voice. Yesterday's result, therefore, may be con- sidered not a republican victory, or even a victory of the law-abiding elements in the two old parties combined, but a vietory for the genuine working- inen, Who love their country and their homes, over the miserable mob who would avenge the tl their ‘own Incompetence and shiftlessness have brought ‘upon them by robbing their worthier neighbors. << Te does not appear that the nationality of Mra. James Brown Potter had anything to do with her failure to arouse the enthusiasm of a London audience. Miss Marie Engle, an American prima donna who did not postpone her debut to accom- modate the Prince of Wales, sang Zerling in the game city last evening, aad was encored several times Other ‘Americans, of both sexes, have been well received by British audi- ences without tne aid of royal patronage. Myron ‘Whitney used to fill Covent Garden almost to suffocation, ight after night. Mary Anderson finds her Enzilsh sojourn so profitable that she an hardly break away. The Daly company made &@ notable success in London. There isa certain Something tn real merit and real beauty for which all the adventitious arts of advertising cannot furnish a substitute, $$ oe ‘The side-show poiltical parties are threatening the business of the old and established political circuses. The prohibitionists nearly carry Micht- gan; tue labor party loses Cincinnati only by a scratch, and polls a heavy vote tn Chicago, though tatuted in that city with anarchism. In numerous ‘Western cities the fusion tieket ts composed of re- pubiicans and democrats, in opposition to the Iabor ticket, fighting alone. If the so-called great Parties do not soon make definite issues upoa the quor and labor questions, a new opposition party may bring fusion and confusion to both. —So aaa A notable feature of the fund now raising for a monument to Henry Ward Beecher 1s the liberal- {ty of the subscriptions from members of the dra- matic profession. Mr. Beecher was not a regular attendant at the theater, or an encourager of amusements of that sort in any general way; but he went now and then tosee a good play, he dis- Pussed the whole subject in a broad-minded fash- fon, and he never found it necessary, in the pulpit OF out of it, totreat am actor as if he were a social outeast. It seems Probable that Michigan tsa fre~trade state. <<< The verdict of a jury of Afty thousand voters im Chicago is a Mtting supplement to the verdict Of the twelve citizeus who sat in judgment on an- arehisua last summer. ———— ‘The old Gag still waves over the Lake City, even ‘though the anarchist murderers ere pot yet hanged.
