SENSATIONAL DISCOVERIES AS TO MBS. WADE'S DEATH. ‘The Killing of Mrs. Ida Wade, stewardess on the ship Canara, now lying at the foot of Balticstreet, Brooklyn, was a mystery until Saturday after- noon, when the police arrested her husband, Harry Wade, the steward of the vessel,on sus- icton of being her slayer. He told a very straight- forwardsstory to the police. He said he was awak- ened by the report of a ‘pistol, and, finding bis wife not in bed, he jumped up and found her lying onthe floor with a revolver in ber hand and & bullet through her brain. He at once called the captain of the vessel, who slept In another part of the ship. The captain, however, teils a different story to Wade's. lie heard no shot, and when he went to the steward’s room he found Mrs. Wade dead. ‘The biood on the wound was quite dry, and hue judged from the appearance that she had been dead some time. Capt. Kellett, of the. sixth pre- cinet, and several physiclans who have since viewed the body, have come to the conclusion that the wound was not self-inflicted. ‘The woman, they say, could not possibly have held the revolver in the" position indicated by the Duilet’s course. ‘Therefore it is definitely concluded that tie hus- band, who is described as a Very jealous man, shot her. “it was also learned that Wade has tre quently threatened to kill lls wife, Mrs. Wade Was to have accompanied her husband on a two- years’ trip to China in the Canara, which was to have salled next week. The inquest wili_ be held today. Ida had led an honest life since her mar- Tiage to Wade six years ago. A PATHETIC SEQUEL TO THE TRAGEDY ‘The mysterious shooting of Mrs. Wade has had a Pathetic sequel. William F. Clements, the aged father of the woman, who had been greatly excit- G3 ind, Erieved, was stricken with apoplexy Sun- day morning in his boarding house, 94 Kent ave- nue, Wiillamsbungh, and died in the afternoon in the Eastern District hospital, He was 75 years old and had been tor some time in delicate health. He was much attached to his daughter Ida, and when he heard of her violent death on Friday he Decame almost frantic. When he subsequently viewed the remains he wept. bitterly, and had to be removed from the room. ‘The old nian went di- rectly to the Congress street police station, and denounced his son-in-iaw, Stewart Wade, as the murderer of his daughter. le related to the cap. tain how Wade had frequently assaulted Ida and threatened to take her life. “The wretch,” he exclaimed, “shot the poor girl when she had her hands up, begging for mercy.” On returning to his boarding bouse in Williamsburgh he talked all the evening about the death of his daughter and continued to accuse her husband of taking her life, At 10 o'clock yesterday morning he was found un- conscious in his room. In her early life Ida became an associate of some thieving girls, and in 1873 she was arrested, with Cassie “Mack, for stealing some trimmings from a store in Fulton street. On the trial 1t was shown that the girls had been operating exten- sively, and each was sent up for three years and six minths. Ida, at her own request, was sent to Sing Sing. ‘so far as can be learned She has lived ‘an honest life since her release from prison. Salvationixts Axsailed. ROUGUS BREAK UP A MEETING OF THE ARMY AND BLOOD IS SPILLED. A telegram from Savannah, Ga., Sunday night, says: The Salvation Army meeting here to-night was the scene of a riot which imperiled scores of lives. The army meets in Ford's Hall, and has nightly attracted three or four hundred people. To-night an immense throng surrounded the building. While the Salvation band was playing the police appeared and arrested five merabers of the army who played the instruments at_ the bar- racks, ‘They refused offers of Dall, and said'they Would make a vest case. ‘Three of ‘the army, who were not arrested, announced to the crowd that they would conduct the meeting. The hall was quickly filled to Its utmost capacity, an unusually large sprinkling of roughs belug in thecrowd. At 9 O'clock one of the roughs insuited a lady sit- ting near him. Her escort struck him in the face. In an instant the roughs rose in a body ana pre- cipated a fight. Some of the more respectable men present chaipioned the cause of the lady’s Protector, and forty or fifty men were soon in— ¥olved in’a terribie free fight. Many of thetougns Were armed with clubs, while chairs and other movable objects were used with terrible effect. Several piscols were flourished, but no shots were Hired. ‘There was no policeman present, and the combatants fought for twenty minutes’ before a detail of blue-coats arrived and cleared the hall. Two inen suffered broken noses, several bad teeth knocked out, and twenty-five others were more or less seriously battered up. ‘The hundred and fitty or more women present added to the confusion by screaming and rushing about the hall seeking safety from the fying missiles. Many of thei huddled in terror on the stage. ‘The scene of the fight was at the head of a narrow filgnt of stairs, Which furnish the only exit from the hall, and t6 escape to the street necessitate.l charging through, the very thickest Of the fray. Had the statrway been accessible many lives Would probably have been lost in the panic-stricken rush of women, ‘owe. — Impromptu Duel in Louisiana.
