Asthe information charged the offense to be continued from Nov, Ist, 1885, to Jan. 6th, 1886, until the fling of the information, it was thanifest that an OMficial note of that date’ was essential to the case. Mr. H. E. Davis, assistant district attorney, said that last June the matter had come up, and the Spure had’ then refused to quash informations on 1 ground, but had suggested that hereatter the €lerk ‘of the Police Court should indorse on all in formations the date of the fling. He had since then urged the matteron theclerk, and had spoken to the judge of the Poitee Court ‘about it, but 10 change had been made, Judge Macarthur sald that he would set aside all the information since last March that had no date of filing. Mr. Davis appealed to the court not to make the ruling now, and the judgesald: “Tdon't think that your oficé has been without fauitin thismatter.” The District attorney asked that the court should make bis Tuling to date from to-day. WILson BARRETT’s “HaMLET.”—So great was the desire to see Mr. Wilson Barrett’s much dis- cussed rsonation of Hamiet that even desira- Die standing room was not procurable at the National Theater shortly after eight o'clock last night. Every seat in the house was filled by one of the most brilliant and distinguished audiences gathered in Washington this season. | The. Presi. lent and Mrs. Cleveland and Col. and Mrs. Lamont occupied a box, and through the house were to be seca many other government officials” and_ people Well known In public life and in society. This notable and critical assemblage watched with deepening interest Mr. Barrett’s portrayal of espeare’s subtle and fascinating creation and almost to a man remained seated until the curtain Teil a few moments before midnight. The same signs of intelligent appreciation of Mr. Barrett’s ‘work, expressed by frequent and enthusiastic out- bursts of applause and repeated calls before the curtain, marked the eee of the play even” to a greater degree | than on is two previous appearances, so that whatever differences of opinion there may be as to the just- ness of the underlying conception of this new Hamlet which Mr. Barrett shows us, it cannot be dented that last night's audience was abundantly leased with the English actor’s embodiment of it. ‘his Hamlet 13. handsome young prince, strong and lithe of limb, duly conscious of his noble heritage, and plainly not unmindful of those per- sonal powers and graces which win him immedi- ate favor in the popular eye. About him there hangs little of the contemplative air of the stu- dent, and the harrowing doubt and self-distrust Which form so marked and persistent a phase of the character as presented by other actors, appear Dot at all or only as quickly evanescent moods, that Teave no abiding impress on the resolute and manly ality. It is this absence of the beau- Urul and poetic inelancholy, to the present gene- Tation of thoughtful Amerie.in pluy-goers the chief mark apd charm of the ideal Hamlet, which will rove, the greatest source ‘of disappointinent in Mr. Barrett's impersonation to those who come to it with weil fixed notions of the charac- er. Aside from this, Mr. Barrett’s Hamlet is a plece of work of rare merit, showing the high- esi attainments of histrionic art in the keen in- With which the smatiest details have patientiy and consistently wrought out and the harmonious informing spirit which pervades it from first to last. 1t ts full of effective louches which are entirely pew with Mr. Barrett and added not a little to the lively interest with which last night's performance was Watched. ‘The rearrangement of the play which Mr. Barrett has made has un- questionably added to the Iuctdity and. consecu- Uveness of the action. These novelties and changes can only be alluded to. Mr. Barrett's treatiuent Of the scene with Giuildenstern and Rosencranz was particularly effective, and that With (phel a bo less 80, though the latter migat be regarded by some as verging on the melo- dramatic. The famous soliloquy was strongly Tendered, though wanting In that air of selfcommunion which has been referred toabove. ‘The death scene was admirably worked ‘up, and held the audience spell-bound uatil, ha ing kissed the portrait of the father whose ghostly behests he had accomplished, even at the cost of lure and love, he fell back with a weary smile and stretched out dead. Miss Eastlake Was a satis- factory Ophelia and the remainder of the com- pany did creditable work. The mounting of the piece was very beautiful and in exquisite taste throughout. ‘This evening Mr. Barrett will ap- pear In “Clito,” the scene of which is laid in Athens, Mopsgsxa’s ENGAGEMENT.—The sale of seats for the engagement of Mme. In exactly forty minutes he reappeared, stating that the Untontown man Would not takein the sheep. ‘The citizen, know- ing it was quite impossible fora man togo to Uniontown and return in such a short time, refused! to have anything more to do with the matter.
