HARRY SUTPHEN ON TRIAL IN THE POLIOR COURT. The case of Harry Sutphen, the alleged manager of the so-called Cosmos club, at No. 1702 Penn- svlvania avenue, charged with permitting gaming in the rooms, was called in the Police Court this afternoon and his counsel, Mr. A.B, Williams, en- tered a plea of “not guilty.” Mr. Lavender ap- peared lor the prosecution. " William L. Riley, tes- Uled that defendant had never been elected a member of the club. Poker was played in the Toons and the defendant received what money was “drawn down.” They also played policy in the rooms. Detective Raff testified to the rald, and to finding a man writing policy. Mr. Williauis testified that he was ina gam: poker about two weeks ago. and the defendant took the “draw down.” Witness played in the Tools twice since the defendant took charge. Willtain L. Riley was called and testified 1° of that the name of the club was ch: trom the Cosmos club Lo the Ivy club. He had sold lottery ickets in the club and received the benefits thereirom. Witness hud been flaed $100 for seil- ing lottery tickets, but he had not yet paid the fine. ‘The court ordered that the fine be paid by to-morrow. The defendant testified that on the 2d of Febru- ary he purchased for $63.75 one-half interest in the furnivure and fixtures, and Was to conduct the poker games in the front room. The back room Was controlled by Riley, and was to be used to carry on the poilcy and lottery business, He wus present at only three games of poker, and each ‘Ume took part in the game. THE SENTENCE.
