Childs yesterday preached at the Sixth Presbyterian church, in accordance with the instructions of the Washington city presby- | tery and formally declared the pulpit vacant, Rev. F.H. Burdick, the pastor having been dropped from the rolls of the presbytery, some thirty or forty people met in Endowment hall last evening for religious exercises and after the singing, Mr. Burdick read the seventeenth chapter of Acts, Which gives an account of the Apostle Paul's visit to Thessalonica and the confusion and uproar which was created by those opposed to his teach- ings. ‘They complained to the rulers of the city saying “These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also.” ‘The narrative then speaks of the apostles visit to Berea when many of the peopie believed and “searched the scriptures is Ubings were so.” Mr. Burdick mented upon the scripture and sald. that ‘as no place of worship in the world, Te were places for Worship. Dr. Newman and the Chinese. A SERMON ON A RECENT PROCLAMATION OF TEE EMPEROR. Rev. Dr. J. P. Newman preached at the Metro- Politan church yesterday on a recent announce- ment that the Emperor of China had issued a proclamation that hereafter there 1s to be no religious intolerance in any part of China. Chinese subjects, the emperor proclaims, are free to accept or reject Christanity, as they may decide for “themselves, and in Whatevar they may do they will Be protected But even if they becom ‘tians they must remain Chinese and loyal t Emperor of China, ‘This stipulation Dr. New- man interpreted as a Warning to the pope and a | e to the Koman church that she iust not make any undue transgressions. Dr. Newman quoted from oiticial reports, which he claimed Showed that the Chinese tn California were more thrifty, more moral, more industrious, more sober, more ‘honest, less’ criminal and better citizens ah the Irish or the Germans or the cans. In this country, he sald, after Jong and weary wanderings, the three branches of the human race—u ¢ Shem, Ham and daphet—had mei ala in’the persons Of the Chinese, the negroes and the Angio-Saxon, ‘Then raising his hands heavenward he exclaimed: “Cursed be the man, in or out of Congress, In power or out of power, who would attempt to je tw 5 arating these three fraternal branches of the human race.” Se The Farmers and the Hay Market. Emmons’ expenses in the case. Knong the bills objected to. are those of experts that testified that Mrs. Emmons was sane. The highest of these fs that of Dr. Van Bibber, of Bal- timore, who wants $400 for his services. Mr. Kent said to'a Stax reporter that Dr. Van Bibber wason the stand five minutes and testified to having -nt three hours in the examination, which con him that Mrs Emmons was ‘sane. He charged $400, while Dr. Godding, who was at court after day, and was on the stand for more than day, nd mehde out Dill Of only $200, orien derstood, that Prot. Emmons’ counsel will re- sist paying Mrs. Emmons’ counsel fees. On the other hand, Mrs. Emmons’ counsel declare that Prof. Emmons and his counsel do not show any disposition to carry out the fair promises made in court, and intimates that a proceeding may be Degumh to compel a recognition ‘by Mr. Emmons of Mrs. Emmons’ rights in certain property. ——— ‘Transfers of Real Estate.
