THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS, Annual Written Examinations Abel- ished—The Appropriation fer Teach= ers? Salaries. The board of school trustees last night, upon motion of Mr. Fish, decided to abolish the annual written examination of pupils at the end of the School year. Mr. Fish sald the purpose was to get rid of the cramming system, and to get the full benefit of teaching up to the last moment of the School year. In the discussion it was stated that without these examinations the teachers of eighth grade schools would select the pupils in their Schools to be sent to the High school. Mr. Dar- lington said the High school would be swamped by the number that would be sent there, and objected to the resolution because he thought they were going beyond their depth. ‘TRACHERS’ SALARIES, A resolution offered by Mr. Fish urging the Com- missioners to induce Congress t@ amend the Dis- appropriation bill so as to authorize the em- ment of G4 teachers at an av salary of $655, making a total of $447,900, was adopted. Mr. Fish’stated that he had been informed that the appropriation for teachers’ salaries had been re- duced in the House {rom $448,720 to $438,720 by a clerical error. Unless the bill was amended, a re- duction would have to be made in salaries of teach- ers which, he clatmed, would work @ injus- tice. A letter from G. E, Overton, stating that Sue could not get-sixth grade school books from the contractor except by sending to Baltimore was referred to the District Commissioners. ‘The com- inittee on buildings was requested to inquire into the question whether the District Comunissioners or the school board were authorized to naine pub- Ue school bufldings, SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES. ‘The result of the examination of candidates for teachers’ certificates was announced as follows: ‘Third-class certificates—Helen B. Offley and Nora Hoelsberger; first-class—Frank D. Foster, Joseph ‘Tromer, Helen M. May, James Storum, Jane Dona- van, Jdmes Stewart, Alice G. Madhouse; sub-as- sistints’ certificates—Bianche Smith, Mary Mc- hy, James B. Clark, Mary R. Thomas, Jesse E RB. Peters, “Harriet C. Laster, Mary L. je I. Mason, Mag- ". Johnson and Ulysses Benjamin W. March and Helen B. y nominated as teachers, F.L. Cardoza | 4s promoted from class 7 to class 8.” E. L. Hop- kins and Mrs. Agnes E. Brown were granted leaves of absey hout pay until the end of the schoot and an application for a teacher's position ived from M. J. Earling, of New York.
