THE EVENING STAR: 7 © te ee THE EVENIN \G STAR. WASHINGTON FRipaY January 14, 1887. c Editor. ‘The Evening Star has a regular, permanent bona fide daily circulation more than treble that of any other duily paper published tn Washington, and much greater than that ef all the ether daily papers here added together. ‘THE STAR cannot undertake to preserve or return rejected communications. Contributors who wish to postess their manuscripts, Y un used, should keep a copy. $8" Matter of whatever character intended for Publication must, if its oppearcnee the same day is desired, reach the office not later Cuan 12 o'clock noon. 52__Ne attention paid to Anonymous Letters. Advertisers will secre their own purpone Lest, and at the same time sveatly accommodate Tak Sran, if they will send in before noon to-morrow thetr announcements for the extra larrs edition of Saturday's paper, the forms of ‘which must be sent to prest much earlier than on the other five days of the week. a ‘The Metropolitan railway company is going to put twenty-five cars of full adult stature on its line to replace a like number of the dwarf convey- ances which now make a pretense of dragging a Ured public through the city. ‘This is good as far ‘as it goes, but twenty-five cars is only the begin- ning of the equipment needed; particularly if the company should now decide to enforce the printed Tule against overcrowding, which, with grim srony, has stared the squeczed and suffocated pas- senger in the face for years. Doubtless some of the conservative shareholders will grumble at the idea of its spending twenty-five thousand dollars In carrying out the provisions of Its charter, keep- Ing faith with the public and matntatning its own togal existence; but with Its stock held at one undred and two, the corporation does not seem In danger of hurting itself seriously by its efor Bh that Ine. ‘The reform in the road's equipment should not 3ease with a mere increase in the number of ve. Meles. The comments of the Commissioners in their report did not bear half severely enough upon the condition of the tracks, with the old-fashioned and wholly abominable T rails sticking upto catch the toes of horses and wrench wheels to pleces in Frossing them. This nuisance 13 most obtrusive at turning places, where, in orier to prevent the tar from leaving the track, the outer rafl is raised some tneles above the Maer rail, forming an al- most impassable barrier to ordinary vehicles, and being particularly dangerous at night. Dies, also, with which tne roadway between the tracks 1s laid are tn some piaces tnordinately large, and have so effectually abolished travel across them that the grass grows undisturbed between the stones. One railroad ring has been made to smart, and the houest citizens of Jowa are rejoicing greatly thereat. Governor Larrabee has just certiflad back tothe federal government more than two 4nd a half million acres of land originally voted by Congress to the state to be used in aid of the coustruction of certain railways. One of these Toads, the Sioux City and Pacific, having failed to Perform the conditions attached to the grant, the land has reverted to the state, and fs by the state tm turn certified back to the United States, to be opened for settlement in the usual manner of pub- lic lands. Of course, the railway company made adesperate resistance. It is so rare a thing that the people get their own ina contest with a cor- oration that we can hardly wonder at the sensa- tion caused by the governor's act, both in Iowa and outside. ee Buffalo is the scene of a very pretty quarrel over the application of the Sunday laws to various oc- cupations. A citizen identified with a local re- form society has had the manager of the Casino theater arrested for giving an entertainment on Sunday evening, and the manager has retorted by causing the arrest of the president of the Young Men's Christian association for keeping his oti re- Mnery running on the Lord's day. Much relief will be felt by business men and amusement caterers everywhere when the courts have made some well- defined rulings on the question whether it 1s as much of an offence to turn the weekly day of rest into a day of work as to turn it into® day of rec- reation, + -—___ ‘The striking coal-handlers presumptively had litle notion, when they went into thetr revolt, that they were inflicting more tnjury upon the poor in the greateities than upon the rich. The rich generally lay in their season's supply in the Ya. They can afford, too, to burn wood at a puch, or to resort to gas and oll stoves. The poor eannot. They buy their coal In small quantities at a hizh price when everything ts at its best; but ‘when there is a strike and a stoppage of produc- tom they have to shiver. If workingmen every- ‘where could appreciate the force of Mr. Powderly’s familar precept, that the conduct of oné branch ‘oof the labor world hes @ positive effect upon the welfare of every other branch, they would make the strike the last expedient on their list, to be used only When every other resource had failed, a ‘There is talk of a tie-up on that famous Broad- Way railroad in New York city. Some of the per- 3ons interested in the road at the bezinning of its zereer are more concerned about an impending ock-up than about all the tie-ups the discon- yented employes can devise, No Loxa Proctaxaios. | QUALITY, PRICFS AND REPUTATION SPEA AK LOUDER FOR US THAN WORDS.
