THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON that of any ether daily paper published in Wasbingtes, gad canal to thet of all the stber daily papers bere added tagether. THE STAR cannot undertake to preserve or Teturn rejected communications. who wich to possess their manuscripts, ¥ wn- used, should keep a capy. 5B No attention paid to Anonymous Letters, Special Announcement. The Christmas Edition of THR EVENING STAR, to be issued an Friday (Saturday being a legal Aaléday, when publication is omitted), will be altogether the finest example of a newspaper ever published in Washington. It will be a truly mammoth edition, in size as well as in circulation, consisting of a triple sheet, or twelve pages, in all, of eight broad columns each, making a grand sum total af 96 columms! Of these between Afty and sixty columns will be filled with fresh, entertaining and useful reading matter, or considerably more than ts contained in any ane of the large monthly ‘magazines of the day, which se for thirty-five cunts each, while THE STAR will be sold over the counter, as usual, for the trifing sum of PWO CENTS But quantity will not prove to be the ondy mexit of this phenomenal issue. The table of contents will be found to be exceptionally rich and varied, as well as extended. Some of the special attractions may be enumerated as follaws: 4. Amorviginal and characteristic story for boys, mntitled “The Speaking Tube,” by J.T. TROW- BRIDGE, the weld known and justly popular novelist, HL “Christmas for Sure,” a graphic and touch- ing portraiture of backwoods life in the Southwest, writen for THE STAR by JOHN HABBER- TON, author of that famous skit, “Helen's Mes,” and Of the still better story, “Brueton’s Bayou.” 4IL, “Sacred t the Memory of Elizabeth Jane Porter,” a strong yet delicatety-shaded sketch of Ufe and loveim the South, full of keen insight of character. Written expressly for this issue, by a YOUNG LAY OF WASHINGTON. IV. The beginning of a series of original, enter- taiming and instructive articles an the subject of Do- mestic Architecture in Washington, aad collateral themes, by Mr. K ©. GARDNER, the distin. guished Architect, author of the popular books, “Homes and How to Make Them,” “Phe House tat Wii Built.” £c., &c. ¥. Original Poctry by Miss LOUIS M. AL- COPP, by Mes. 4. D. T. WHITNEY, and by RICHARD WATSON GILDER, all of whom are recognized as amoug the cleverest American writers of verse. FE “Bridgeton Christmas,” an original, humor- ous and sparkling monologue, by ROSE TERRY COOKE, showing why Christmas is more enjoyed by the poor than by the rich. In addition to these extraordinary attractions, there will be « more than ordinarily large number and variety of original articles, on topics of current | interest, prepared expecially for this issue, tom gether with al the news of the day, local, domes- tia and foreign, and more than the usual quentity of welbselectelt reading matter, caleulated to enter- tain, instruct and amuse all classes of reatters, 52" An extra large circulation for this issue is | aiready assured, not onty in Washington, for which many heavy orders have already been re- ceived, but im all the outlying towns and neigh- barheod, and through the muaits for distant points. The opportunity thus afforded business houses to Place their announcements before the public is an exceptional one, and those alive to their own in terests should not be slow to take advantage of it. © Necessarity, om account of the greatly in- ereqsed number of pages constituting this holiday edition, and the much larger number of copies to be printed, the presses must be started considerably earlier on Friday than usual, in order to meet the extraordinary demand for it at home and abroad. tis therefore important that advertisements in- tended for it should be handed in at the earliest ‘moment possible—and not later than 12 o'clock ‘oon—im order to insure insertion and secure Proper classification. ———— Ir Babcock lake # filled up, what will take ite Place a6 a public skating-ground? The active, healthy cbtidrea of Washington are numbered by ‘thousands. If they have a taste for wholesome Out-of-door sports, it ought to he encouraged in every possible way. Siating in the open air keeps ‘Them Out of mischief elsewhere, tt builds up thelr Dodies, and it has no evil associations, The river, however, is deep in places and bas a treacherous current. There are similar objections to Rock creek and the Eastern branch. Prudent parents | ave loth to have their children expose themselves ‘Yosuch perils; yet the temptation to the children, Teduced to the alternative of disregarding their Parents’ wishes or giving up an amusement en- Urely unobjectionable in itself, ts dangerously strong. ‘Why cansot a plot be set apart on one of the Pubile reservations, where tt will be sightly as Well as useful, for an artificial lake, on which ‘swans and other water-fow! can swim in warm ‘Weather and the children can enjoy themselves ‘When the surface is frozen? The original expense for construction would be trifting, and, doubtless, Af Whe government would provide the place, enough, money could be raised by private subscription to Pay the wages of necessary attendants in the win. Yer. Brery dollar of the outlay would be an in- ‘Veatment in Juvenile good morals, —————— In war a great captain often owes his fame as maweh to his ability to keep out of a battle in which he is bound to be whipped, as to get into one where he tscertaim af victory. In the administration of Justice the same rule ought to apply. The distinction conferred Upon Mr. Morris will bear fruit im a crop of com. tempt cases infuttely more troublesome than his, 3t Wee conditions are only favorable. Unless the newepaper writers of Baltimore differ from those of other cities, Judge Duffy will find tt easter to Wring lemoa-juice from a cobbie-stone than to male them talk when they don't choose to. oo ‘The dea of two members of the committee on temperance tn the lower house of the Georgia legislature assaulting each other in an outburst of sneer, shows how a —— im a nue, after The 0 te aps, whien ‘Deeubnove persistently iisused than “temperance © lo recall the events of the past few months must Weeoliect that the same threat was made by the tame people, or others like them, betore the met. jag of the Richmond general assembly, yot Mr. Powderly remains as tast in bis chair asever.
