Carthage, Mo., Special to the N. ¥. World. More than ordinary local taterest is: manifested in the train’ robbery in Texas last Saturday, be- cause the heroine of the occasion Mrs. ‘Wittichs, a Carthage woman, who, with her hus- band, was one of the passengers, It will be re- membered that a mail and express train, with a full complement of employes and cars full of pas- sengers, most of whom were men, was taken pos- session of in broad daylight: by three men. But the remarkable part of the story was that there were United States soldiers on board who submit- ted tamely to being disarmed without firing ashot. At Washington it is dented that there were any soldiers on board, but Mrs, Wittichs declares em- patically that there were. When spoken to about the matter she exclaimed: “There were three colored soldiers on board, under an officer, guard- ing some prisonets, and, of course, we expected them to protect us.” Imagine our surprise when they quietly submitted to being disarmed.” ‘THE STORY IN DETAIL, Mrs. Wittichs then told the story of the robbery as follows: “We had started on our journey to Carthage, from Wichita Falls, Tex., at 10 ocock a, m. AU 11 o'clock the train stopped at or near a Uttle station called Belleview, to get water at a tank. Twas sitting about acouple of seats from the ‘back of rear car, and on the left-hand side. ‘There was a long walt at the water-tank and the ssengers began to wonder at the delay. My hus id, Who had been looking out of the car, ex- claimed at this moment that a robbery was gol on outside, 1 looked and saw two men with ret oe vers in their hands pointed at a half dozen men standing in line with their hands up and another man searching their clothing. :By this time what Was happening outside was known to all aboard. The thought of stance was discussed, but 1t Was soon learned that noone in our car was armed andit was abandoned. We could see the robbers in the coach ahead as they came down the aisle searching the pockets of every man, and the all- important question of how ‘to serete our money and valuables demanded our attention. We had time enough to make our plans and we deposited What we had tn every conceivable place of conceal- ment. My husband gave part of his money to me and retained some, “-after the robbers had robbed alt in the coach ahead of us two of them entered the carI was in, and, tevelling their revolvers at the ngers, ordered ‘hands up,’ which was promptly obeyed. ‘The process of robbing the passengers then began, ‘one of the robbers holding his revolvers, one in each hand, on the crowd, while the other called up each passenger in Lurn, ‘beginning with the one nearest him and almost invariably getting off some joke or rough remark on his victim. After Tiling his pockets the robber ordered him out of ‘the front door and called up the next man, After searching probably about two-thirds of the men the robbers became excited and in a great hurry. ‘They ceased searching the men and ‘slinply or- dered them to hand over thelr money and other Valuables, which some of them did, while some de- nied having anything and were uliowed to pass out of the car. “One gentleman, when commanded to leave, objected, and said that his wife was in the car, Whereupon the robbers’ chiet_ remarked: “We do not molest ladies;” but they compelled him to go out. “Perhaps as the gentlemen had no weapons re- sistance would have been useless; but Iam en- Urely sausfied that if they had ‘been armed the robbers would have been sparen My reasons for so thinking are that they had not a formidable appearance, and evidently were new at the busi- ness, and betrayed a certain trepidation not in keeping with the nonchalance that indicates knigits of the road. A telegram from Texarkana, Texas, December 16, says: James Howard, a white man, was taken from the county jail of this (Bowie) county last Right at midnight and lynched for committing a somewhat extraordinary offense. Last July How. ard, Who Was 35 years old, married Mary Winchew, a girl only 13 years of age. It seems from her story that he began to abuse her shortly atter their honeymoon, but she kept the matter a pro- found secret from every one except her mother, | to whom she recently confided hertroubles, result- | ing ina Warrant being sworn out on Tuesday by thé girl's mother charging Howard with brutal! maltreating his wife. ‘The young wife’s story almost surpasses belief. She says that Howard would strip her, and then, tying her feet securely together, would hang her tip on a hook by her fect, and while In this position would beat her unine cifully until the rush of blood to her head rendered her unconscious. This method of maltreating his wife he practiced overa dozen times. Finally, about the 1st of November he grew tired of simply whipping, beating and kicking her, and invented a novel torture, Howard bad once been: engaged in raising cattle, and had a lange brand- ing tron with the letter H (his initial and trade mark) cut in the end of it. Without communicat- ing his intentions to his wife, he tied her to the ‘bed on the night of November 1, and, heating the fron red hot in the kitchen stove, deliberately branded his wife in two places. The girl's mother oak the red hot iron burned very deep into the delicate flesh of her daughter, disfiguring her for life. The branded marks are ‘five inches long and nearly four inches in width. Howard threatened to kill his wife if she told any one about. hi treatment of her. The wife was unable to leave her bed after the horrible burning, and a few days ago sent for her mother and told her story ‘When the character of the charge against How- ard became known on the street yesterday excite- Ment and indignation ran very high. Crowds gathered about the jail to cateh a giimpse of the unnatural monster, and threats of lynching were freely made, and Jaller Hargett’ anticipating trouble, swore in four additional guards. As night approached the excitement became more serious, and a secret meeting was held in one of the lodge rooms of the town. About midnight the four guards at the jail left their posts to procure_some- ing to eat at a neighboring restaurant. During: their absence an orderly mob about 30 masked men. knocked at the jail door. Depnty Hargett opened the door, thinking It was the guanis returning. The mob thus gained entrance, overpowered Har- tt, and, taking Howard from the cell, carried him about a mile below town, to a_trestlework on. the Texas Pacific road, where they put a rope around his neck, tied his’hands and feet and then Pushed him over the bridge.
