THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C.. WEDNESDAY. Ne em, “OCTOBER 27, 1886—-SUPPLEMENT. Austria's Dead Statesma: THE CAREER OF VoN BEUST, WHO BITTERLY FOUGHT BISMARCK. Count Friedrich Feridand von Beust, the dis- tinguished Austrian statesman, whose death Sunday at Altanbarg, his estate on the Danube, was mentioned in Monday's STAR, was born at Dresdren, January 13, 1809, and was edu- eated for a diplomatic carver, which he entered io 1831, when he received an appointment in the midistry of foreign affairs of Saxony. In 1349 he was concerned in the stern measures whieh the King took to repress the revolution, and was obliged to fee, with other_ members of the government, to Kenigstein. The King was Testored to the throne by Prussian bayonets and von Beust concluded the alliance between Prussia, Saxony and Bavaria that crushed out the popular movement. He was made presi- dent of the council, and when Prussia and Ausiria undertook the conquest of Schleswig and Hoistein he struggled hard to thwart taem ‘his iavorite scheme of a union of the smailer man states Inio a power that should be the equal of Austria and Prassia, but met ouly with failure. “He was antagonizing Bismarck, who wed entirely too strong for him. In 1586 le [oon theside of Austriain ber war with Prussia, but before the Saxon troops could be mobilized the battles of Sadowa and Koniggracz left Aus- tria at the merey of Bismarck and made Saxony subject to Prussia, ‘on Beusi then forsook his native country and went to Austria, where the emperor granted him vaturaiization and appointed him minister Of foreign affairs and suvsequently chancellor of the empire. His real faue daies from this time. By his itberal, sagacious policy he brought about the harmonious union between Austria gad Huupury and the crowning of Frauc Joseph as king 0: the Magyars on Jane 5, 156 He reconstructed the ariny and the finances, and concluded an alliance with France. This agreement, however, he failed to keep whe Napoleon went to war with Prussia in 1870. In his controversy with the Due de Graminont, iwo years afterward, the latter showed that you Beust had bargained to aid France by in- Vading Silesia in the rear of the Prussiaus, movement that might have change of the war; aud this reve.ation of is keep his promise drove him into virtual exile as Austrian ambassador at London, where be remained until 1878, when he was transterred to Paris, In 1582 he retired trom public lif and busied himseit with the preparation of h memoirs, His hatred of Bismarck was a power- fal motive of iis career; but he lacked the courage in 1870 tostrike lim the premeditated biow. ————_+es_____ A Pike y Weather Prophet.
