MASSACHUSETTS AVENUE. What the Commissioners Say in Reply to Objections to their Plan. The District Commissioners think that the Project (or extending Massachusetts avenue ha been unfairly criticised, Commissioner Wheatley said to-day that the objection made tothe use of money for this extension, when many of the county roads now open needed improvement, arose entirely out of tgnorance ofprovisions of the appropnation bill. This Proposed improvement is to be made, he said, Under the following section of the current ap- Propriation bill: “For sweeping, cleaning and sprinkling strects, avenues and alleys, $59,000, tor cue Tent work of repairs of streets, avenues and alleys, $25,000; current work of county roads and suburban streets, $40,000; for opening and extending suburban streets, $30,000: provided that this provision shail not be construed to authorize the widening of any street now laid out und opened,’ ‘rhe $30,000 appropriated for opening and ex- tending suburban streets, he sald, could not be expended on county roads and suburban streets now existing, nor could it be used on the city streets. Ludlow said, the prop- erty owners, or the property there, would pay for this improvement many times over. Now the land lying along the route was taxed as agricultural land on a valuation of $100 au acre. This improvement would at once in- crease its assess-d value, and inside of five years the increased revenues of the District frou that Property would pay for improving the road. Merely irom @ business point of view, he be- lieved the proposed extension was a good thing. Next year, if the Commixsioners have tt money, he said, they pi 4 Lo push tinprove- ments ‘along uvenues in the clty, Georgia ave- nue, Virginia avenue and others, opeuing seo- ous within the city limils which are now comparatively inaccessible.
