ALRAvGH’s Ope Hovse.—It would be difficult to contrive more Intensely laughable complications than those on which Mr. Pinero has built up his farce comedy of “The Sehool Mistress,” and one would have to search a long Ume before finding a company better fitted to develop them in stage action than that which Miss Rosina Vokes has with her. Miss Vokes met with a cordial greeting when she appeared ov the scene for the first time last nightas Peggy Hessierigge, the audacious; mischievous articled pupil; and Mr. Weedon Grossmith re- ceived a round of applause as be came forward as the Hon, Vere Queckett, This gentleman throughout the evening fairly divided the honors with Miss Vokes, as he was at his best in the role assigned him. No disertption of plot or incident could eateh or convey to the reader any adequate conception of the Irresistible drollery oi the piece. The one fault to be found with itis that the first act is by tar the most laughable of the three, while in the last act the interest has sensibly fallen off. Miss Vokes’ reckless comed: rried everything before it and found in Mr. Grossmith’s pitiable but no Tess laughable characterization of Queckett an lent foil. Mr. Elliott's Admiral was rather grotesque thin huinorous. “Mr. Thorp’ Regi nald was a capital piece of work, and Mis re as Miss Dyott, and the other young ladies were entirely satisiactory. NATIONAL THEATER.—A chastened and much toned-down version of Sardou’s racy comedy, “Divoreons,” was last nizht presented for the first time in this city by Mile. Marie Aimee and her company at the National Theater. Like all Sardou's. works, “Divorcons” 1s ingeniously contrived, brisk and clever of action. Mlle. Aimee wa’s seen at her best in the role of Cypri- » which she carried through as only 8 roman could, with a saucy breeziness, playing the least tendency to senti- mentalism, filling What, In jess skilful hands, might have been tender passages with a mock: ing playfulness of affection that had no sugges- tion of the emotional. In a word, Mile. Almee forgot at no point that it was comedy, and French comedy at that. Mr. Thomas H. Burns filed the role of Des Prunelics with an easy and humorous contidence, though there was noth- ing of the Freneh spirit In bis interpretation, Mr. Newton Chisnell as Joseph, a waiter, pro- voked no little merriment by’ a ‘species of gro- tesque comedy which was not out of place. To the Editor of THE EVENING STAR: 1n your Issue of last eyening is published what purports to be an interview with Commis- sioner Webb, in which he endeavors to cast the blame for the dirty condition of our streets upon the contractor for street sweeping, which he kuows, or onght to know, is unjust. The j fault is not with the manner in which the | Sweeping is done or the machines, but the non sweeping of streets. It must be evident toevery one that it is a matter of Impossivility to keep | the streets clean when they are swept only once | | @ week and sume once in tivo weeks, the excep- lions being Pennsylvania avenue every night, ‘7th and 9th streets twice a Week and # portion | of F street three Limes a week, which leaves an accumulation of store sweepings on these Streets to collect in the gutters. | Aguin, at this season of the year the dropping | leaves gather very iast, and will increase from | year year as the trees grow larger. These leaves are being constantly ground up by the travel over them. The contractor can only sweep such streets as the schedule furnished by the Commissioners calls for each night. He can- not bein the work before 10 p. m., and musi | bave all tue sweepings weathered in by 8am. nd if he is 15 minutes bebind he is “docked.” ‘ne Comunissioners have three inspectors, who over the prescribed route as the work is | being done.and the contractor has one inspector | on footand one in an open buggy doing the same, to see that the work is properly” per- formed. THE BUSINESS PORTION OF THE TOWN WIPED OUT AND MANY PRIVATE RESIDENCES DE- STROYED—PEOPLE WITHOUT HOMES AND DE- PENDING ON CHARITY. Two-thirds of Salisbury, Md., is in ashes. One hundred and ninety buildings are destroyed, a million dollars has gone up in smoke and five hundred people, whoa few days ago were com- fortably seated in their homes, are without shelter and for food must depend on the charity of the few persons who escaped asimilar fate. There is not a business building left standing, Save two or three small groceriesat the extreme eastern end of the town. The court house and ‘8 few churches are all that are left of the public buildings. The population seem dazed over thelr misfortune and hardly realize that they &re worse off than the inhabitants of Charles- ton, whom they have assisted for the past four weeks. The burnt district includes all the buildiags on Dock, Division, West Church, High, St. Peter's, Williams, East Camden, West Camden, Broad,’ East Park, West Park, West Chestnut and Main streets, THE HEART OF THE TOWN IN RUINS. ‘On the last-named street stood two solid busi- ness blocks. Amid all this desolation the business spirit of the town is triumphant. Ata meeting of the citizens, called yesterday by John Tracy, presi- dent of the board of town commissioners, it was decided to begin rebuilding tne town in brick at once. Most of the buildings were of wood, Which caused the rapidity ot the conflagration, The streets were also very narrow. They will be widened, and when rebuilt the town will look "better than ever before. Many of the merchants will put up temporary Structures until next spring, as winter is ap- Proaching and it will be impossible to put up substantial structures this fall, Food is very scarce and everyone is put on short rations. The population is huddled together at night in the dwellings | principally belonging vo the operatives. Men who considered themselves weil-to-do last week sleep in the houses of thelr hired men, The fire broke out Sunday night at haif-pust six, in the stable belonging to S. THE LABOR CANDIDATE SAYS HE IS NOT A SOCIALIST OR ANARCHIST. Henry George has written 2 letter in reply to Mr. Hewitt’s letter of acceptance, taking issue with him on many points, and denying that he 4s an anarchist, nihilist, socialist or communist. Mr. George then names over the listof the members of the Tammany hall and County democracy commitiee, and who, in the name of the democratic party, teudered him the nom- ination fur mayor, headed by Frederick R. Con- dert. He said that with the exception of the Tespectuble figurehead every one was 4 protes- sional politician. You will find amoug them notorious corruptionists, keepers of gambling houses, officials smircued with the mire of ‘awed, contractors who have grown rich by fat Jous, leaders of “dead rabbits,” and even in more than one case men who have been tried for their lives upon the charge of murder. It fairly represents tue class of inen who, under republican forms, and in the name of democ- racy, have hitherto ruled in this elty, and agalast whom the common working people have at last risen in their might. In conclu- sion, Mr. George challenges the democratic can- didate to debute the ques:ions at issue in pub- lic, and in frank and honorable way prevent their views and meet each other's objections, —— Mr. Oberly on the Labor Question. ‘MOST OF THE WORKINGMEN’S DEMANDS WILL BE INCORPORATED IN THE LAWS IN FIVE YEARS. From the New York Tribune Today. When United States Civil Service Commis- sioner John H. Oberly sits down in an easy chair, turns his priest-like face to the ceiling and rivets his blue eyes on space, it is worth while to listen to what he says. Chatting with him yesterday in the Fitth Avenue hotel the labor question came up. Having assumed his favorite attitude of meditation, he said: “Five years irom now, if we are alive, we shall sce inost of the demands of the workingmen incor- porated in the legislation of the country. ‘They will not yet every tuing, but they will get agreat maby things, because they are right. Mauy of the demangs ascribed to socialism are just and the tendency of legislation is to concede them, It will not be long until contract labor in the prisons is dove away with and until there will be no children at labor under age. Many of the states have already legislated on these points. Tuere will be careful supervision of tenement houses ond mines. Eventually the railroads und telegraphs will go under the control of the overnment as well as similar monopolies. the telegraph will be the drst step. There is no reason why the government should not send my message by electricity as well as by steam. ‘The beginning of government control of rail- roads may be seen ulready in the railroad com- missions established in the several states, and in the movement by the national government for the regulation of interstate commerce. ‘The progress from the control of commerce to the uctual control of the railroads will be a short ste Municipalities will own the gcs works ‘water works, and will furnish the supply tothe people at cost.
