Cathelic Chureh Matters. GATHERING OF ECCLESIASTICS IN BALTIMORE . ‘NEXT WEEK, ETC. From the Baltimore Sun, During the present month three important meetings of Cathoiic prelates will be held at the residence of Cardinal Gibbons. Early next week several bishops will consult with the car- inal looking to the extension of colored and Indian missions in thiscountry. Of late years the Cathoite church has made great progress among the, colored people. In, several of, the loceses, principally In the south, 1 have Thangurtied, local missions. At New Orleans the colored Catholic population is very strong, and has valuable church, educational and ‘charitable prope:ty.. In Kansas, the colored mission bas a eburch, orphan’ asylum, and a weekly newspaper large circulation. The most prominent mission is that under the care of the Josephite Fathers, who bave their headquarters in America in this city, northeast corner Mulberry and Courtland streets. The mother-house of the order is at Mill Hill, London, Engiand. ‘These priests have two churches in Baitimore, several schools, an academy and orphan as; Jum. They also manage missions in Washing ton, Louisville, Richmond and Charleston, 8. C. ‘The bishops intend to devise plans by which evangelization work among colored persons will be more successtully carried on. Later on in the month the trustees, clerical and luy, ot nies Catholic university to be located at Washington, will have an important meet- ing, when it is ex] @ number of important Teports will be made as to the success so far of the undertaking. The final assembly will be of the archbishops of the United States, who will discuss matters of interest to the church in general. ‘THE COLORED PRIEST. Rev. John H. Green, of St. Xavier's colored Catholic chureb, and editor of St. Joseph's Ad- voeate, the organ of the colored Catholics of the arebdiocese of Baltimore, has returned from Quincy, Ill, where he was on a visit to Kev. Augustas Tolton, the only colored Catholle iest who is pastor of a chureh. Rev. Mr. 3reen speaks of Father Tolton asa typical Af rican in appearance, and aman of fine intel- lect. He is an eloquent preacher, and speaks a number of languages fluently. He has lived in Quincy since his youth. Years ago he was sent w Rome, entered the College of the Propoganda, and was ordained last Easter. He was at once assigned to duty at Quincy. While speaking of the colored priest, Rev. Mr. Green sald that it might be probable in the future that some bishop in the United States would ordaiz col- ored candidates for the priesthood, since Rome set the example. $30,000 FoR ARCHBISHOP GIBBONS. At the close of the recent retreat o! the Catno- We clergy at St. Mary’s seminary, North Paca street, Cardinal Gibbons was presented, on be- half of the Catholics of the archdiocese of Bal- more, with a check for $30,000, as a token of ‘their appreciation of bis worth_and the honor conferred on him. Monsignor Edward McCol- gan, Vicar general, was chosen by the priests to make the presentation address. It is stated that Prof. Friedel, of the French institute, has addressed a report to the associa- tion of jewelers and diamond merchants in Paris on artificial rubles. He found the chem- teal composition, density, fusibility, crystaline form and refractive power of the artificial speci- mens handed to him for examination to core Tespond in every respect with the qualities of the natural ruby. Both kinds contain alike Uny air bubbles. But while the cavities in the Fenuine rubies are almost. invariably polyme- fic, with surfaces parallel to the planes of qledvage, thove in the artifictal specimens ex- amined by Prot. Friedel had curved su: frequently of a like form. Moreover, all ‘these pear-shaped bubbles in any given portion of the artificial ruby had their elongated axes Yunning in the same direction. From this Prof. Friedel infers that the material out of which the artificial rubies are made was origi- nally of a pasty consistency, and the bubbles of As striving to escape gave their prison cavities this e form. In consequence of this technical report, the association decided that artificial rubies could not be regarded as precious stones, and any oue selling them as such would be guilty of fraud. It is aleo the organ for secreting and preparing the bile. ‘Think what will hap- pen when the liver becomes clogged or when it secretes too much bile. Then comes the duit heavy headache, loss of appetite, drowsiness, pain in the right side, the akin assumes a sickly yellow appearance.
